View Full Version : Pirate Radio Station Q's
Ok well i always here about pirate radio stations and everything, but i dont actually kno what they are. could someone please fill me in? is it just someone who decides to set up a transmitter and spews out a station on some frequency?
also im interested in starting a small radio station for my friends. what exactly would i need? i have basic radio knowledge, and would like to kno materials, equipment, and any specific things i should probably know about before going about these plans. and also, is it possible to make a reciever/transimitter type thing that will take in a frequency from its original transmitter, and then transmit it even further?
Ex: Original-------------------*max distance b4 fade*>R/T----------->person further out

Pirate radio is operating a station in any band you don't have permission to operate in. Typically this means the FM broadcast band of 87.5MHz to 108.0MHz. Pirate radio station operators create a station for many different reasons, whether for political purposes, neighborhood news and information, playing new or otherwise obscure music, or just for fun.
The basis needs for transmitting are a microphone/mixer for inputting sounds from your voice and any output device (such as a tape deck, CD player, computer, etc.), a modulator (which converts the audio signal into an RF signal), a transmitter, and an antenna. Typically the modulator and transmitter will be built into the same device, but depending on your setup they may be separate components. The antenna will need to be tuned to the frequency you are transmitting in order to not burn out your transmitter and have the most effective range.
The other device you are speaking of is often called a repeater or translator. They are simple devices, simply listening using a standard radio receiver and transmitting the audio on another frequency. Transmitting the audio on the same frequency will cause a nasty interference as the two signals will be slightly out of phase thanks to the distances typically involved in radio.
ok thx. Me and my friends will eventually build a station with this info! It may be some time, but im sure we can do it within months after some planning and preparation. Were going to play alot of Metal related bands, some underground bands, and of course, Rammstien, since no one ever plays Rammstien in Ohio. im going to plan on setting up a computer to just play through a huge selection of tracks randomly and let that just sit through certain intervals in which i will step in and give info n shit as usual

You do realise that you WILL be caught unless you play at random times and from different locations?

well, thats why we make it portable? idk. we probably will be running different times, out of lazyness, forgetfulness and, shear stupidity and inability to "troubleshoot" common radio functions.
still itll be fun.

Post your setup when you're done. Sounds exciting - good luck. :)

Yes, try to keep the power under 250 miliwatts and use directive antennas to minimize interference with the neighbors radios.
