Lately I've been wondering if i should be catholic it or not!?!?! I know a little about it but i also hear wierd crap about it that i dont belive in a single bit, such as confessing to a preacher instead of God and the whole repent thing! I mean come on if a Girl that was a dedicated Christian was out drinking and driving then wrecked then from the whole repent belif thingy she would go to hell! That is pure bullshit prob. made up when Christianity was first founded! And asking the priest for forgivness is shit too which was prob made to give them more power! But other than that stuff and maybe purgatory it seems ok! More religous and involved than baptist!
But can any Catholic give me some more info!

ps. I hope God smites anyone who says anything about priests little boy fettish!!!

When we confess our sins, it is to a priest, but the priest is acting "in persona Christi capita," which means he is absolving sins in the person of Christ, Who is the Head of the Church. The Confessor acts merely as His Minister, it is still God Who forgives, and absolves. We confess, not so much to the priest, as through the priest. This is mentioned in the Bible - "Whosoevers sins you forgive are forgiven them,"
In the case of the girl in the car crash, when you are in a state of mortal sin, all that is required to remit the sins (insofar as to not be condemned to Hell upon death,) is what we call an "Act of Perfect Contrition," which simply means that, truly contrite, the sinner proclaims their repentance to God - a simple (yet sincere and utterlt heartfelt) "I'm Sorry," could suffice. Confession, however, is required before one receives Communion.
But yeah, email me and I'll give ya more info if ya like!
God Bless!

Not all of us are liberals! And, in fact, if you watch closely you can see the modernist influence dropping off slowly over time. The majority of young priests are actually Traditional, and the Tridentine Mass is wildly popular amongst Catholic youth - for good reason! The liberal element you speak of is, actually, quite anti-Catholic.

Catholicism is my favorite Christian sect. It's facinating. Beautiful, elaborate, cathedrals, lots of fancy clothes, insense, chanting and rituals. Not to mention the allure of the ugly underbelly of the Vatican and all the paedophilia stuff and the incredibly bloody background. I also enjoy the fact that most of the holidays and rituals are actually pagan in origin.

Cheers,

Being a catholic is fun, and I know what you're saying about the confession thing, but you won't be absolved if you don't TRULY feel sorry.

I also recommend to keep a skeptical eye when dealing with the church as I find the priests etc fairly cool, but the arch bishops etc are just running fucking franchises.

I mean in all fairness if the catholic church started giving substantial money to charity's (they are capable of this)
I would be a firmer believer but at the mo I'm sorta skeptical about the church and their motives.

Pope John Paul II wanted to sell the priceless collection of paintings the church has and give the money raised to charity but was denied to do so!.

I mean he was the POPE he should have had the power to do whatever he wanted with those stupid paintings

What do the motives, imperfections of the Church have to do with whether being in the Church is what God wants you to do? No one claims the Catholic Church has perfect people running it. What we claim is that Jesus, God, gave humans the power, through the Church, to forgive sins and hopefully make it to heaven.

Priests don't forgive you, God does. hes just there to kind of like put in a good word for you, like "well if hes getting a priest to help him out he cant be too bad". kind of like how you don't pray to the saints, you pray through the saints, they just put in a good word for you. ;)

Heh, not quite. Jesus gave the apostles the power to forgive sins. Ultimately it is God forgiving the sins, though. And you do "pray" to the saints. You don't ask them to do stuff except pray for you.

http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm --online Catechism

Reading that should answer the majority of the questions you have provided that you read it carefully. We use the Catechism as our text book in our morality class (Catholic highschool) and its surprisingly easy to read, but you have to pay careful attention to word choice.

The link I posted is good for looking specific questions up quickly, but if you're serious about pursuing this I would buy the physical book because it's difficult, for me at least, to read long passages on the computer. You can get a nice small copy of the catechism for about $11 on amazon.

I was interested in the Catholic church for quite some time, and embarked on a serious fast in order to see if I was being called to that church.

I sincerely felt that, no - God did not want me involved in that establishment.

The following were the things I believe were revealed to me during that week.

Primarily, I couldn't find a lot of the doctrine to be biblical.
This includes but is not limited to Mary being without sin, confession, etc. (Notwithstanding, although there may be long, elaborate explanations as to why these actually are biblical that I do not know about, the *confirmed Catholics I that dealt with, from the SEVERAL churches in my area, had no understanding of them... and even went as far as to declare they were taught things that simply weren't Christian doctrine. )

(This can be elaborated on in later posts if anyone wishes).

Secondly, I had a real moment when going through the book of St. Matthew during the fast. It eventually came to the realization that, when I sincerely gave my life to Jesus Christ(the toughest test of my life), it was my Catholic peers who gave me the toughest time over it. It was also brought to my attention that these were the people who drank the most, fornicated the most, and lacked the most understanding of Christianity and having a personal relationship with Christ (To this very day, they try to persuade me to get drunk, to have sex, and to indulge. They also scold me for following Jesus)...I even knew confirmed members who didn't understand what the gospel was, or how to be saved!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not some geek just getting picked on. These were, at one time, my best of friends. They turned their back on me, however, when I found out who Jesus was and took up my cross.

Of the Catholic churches I've seen, I cannot say I have seen any good fruit - that is, with the exception of one person. Yet this one person, who truly loves Jesus even moreso than I do, reminds me that I do have Christian brothers and sisters in the Catholic church. Us protestants shouldn't go around fighting with the Catholics - we should respect each other's choices and stay in unity to the best of our understanding of the truth.

And to whoever the guy is who keeps swearing at atheists and people who disagree with him - if you are a Christian, it probably isn't a good witness to attack people when you think they're wrong (or even if you know they're wrong).

We were all terribly wrong at one time, and Jesus didn't jump down our throats when he had the chance. This is because Jesus is love - and I tell you this in love.

In response to an earlier post not all Catholics avoid eating meat during lent or every friday, sure there are people who do but then there are a lot of us who dont take part in those practices. Just because you're Catholic doesnt mean you do everything that the leaders of the church encouraged you to do at one point in time. The people who call themselves Catholic and try to force their religion on you or tell you for example you cant eat meat on a certain day arent following what they are called to do, they are hypocrites but many Catholics will be very accepting if you tell them you want to learn more about their religion and wont force it on you. So i encourage you to go to a Catholic church some day and maybe talk to someone who looks approachabe and not too "hardcore" Catholic.

You should take more than a week to think about this. There is biblical evidence for pretty much everything. If you have questions post them here.

I think if you really look you will find hypocrites and people who don't know their faith, or who participate only for social sort of reasons. That is not a reason to base a belief on.

Jesus gave Peter the keys to the kingdom, he gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins. Those were the Church Fathers. God made the Church for everyone.

there's always going to be hypocrites in every walk of life.

It's just about finding people who you think are true Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindu's, Buddhist's etc.

those friends of yours obviously weren't real friends.

but don't let their ignorance get in the way of what you believe is god.

The Catholic institution has been liberal
for quite some time now. To say liberal catholic is the same as saying Roman Catholic. Roman Catholics are open to science, they've accepted Jews as equals, all catholics practice socialism opennly, they do not take a public stance against evolution... it goes on and on and on.

What? Catholics voluntarily donate to their churches and communities without their Priest having to ask them to. Protestants like Ted Haggard, Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson run their flocks like a business. Pat Robertson even runs a law school! They sit upon multi-million dollar businesses.

Not to say that the Vatican isn't worth a pretty penny in assets. But that is from historical relics and artistries. Whereas, these protestant leaders get theirs from the wallets of their own flock. I will retract my statement if you can show me where Pat Robertson has done "good works" like Mother Teresa. Where he had deemed himself worthy to be a representative of God. Then I will say all Christian denominations are socialist by nature.
