So I'm watching this documentary about the evolution of Theism over time and religions. It goes into the classical sciences and scientists. People like Darwin and Galileo, scientists that have undoubtedly changed the way we see reality and how it compares to religion's literal interpretation, where both students of science and the church. Even Albert Einstein, himself, did not put exact certainty into science without vague theistic tones. I have to admit, I am also a student of the sciences, but I still hold a belief in a very vague passive theism without the religious doctrine.
So the movie goes on about Protestantism and religion in America. It points out that 45% of Americans, if told by science that a certain thing is a certain way and the Bible says something completely contradictory, they would chose the Bible's explanation over science. The uncertainty that classical scientists and hybrid science-theorist always held seems to be disappearing. A sort of "Science can progress and expand, but once we come upon something science can't explain, we have found God" kind of thing. Like God fills out the gaps for things that can only be uncertain due to the limitations of physical reality.
It seems this uncertainty that has been cherished between the church and science is starting to disappear. Now we have fundamentalists who take d the Bible literally or crash planes into buildings in the name of their God and geopolitics. We have Evolutionists who completely write off religion just because of a single component of religion, literal creationism, is contradictory to their school of thought. Between the dichotomy of science and religion, one is going to take over due to the loss of uncertainty.
I believe religion is going to lose this one. Not so much because science can present immediate evidence, but more so because the people who practice religion are undoing their own empires.
Fundamentalists and literalistic interpreters scare and hurt others. Relating back to the statistic presented by the film, literal interpretation of the Bible is very ignorant in these modern times. You don't attract people with ignorance when ignorance in this day and age will make you impoverish and forgotten.
Religious icons abuse their powers. People calling Jihads against the west or saying God allowed 9/11 to happen because New York is a Soddom and/or Gemorrah may play to their bases. But it makes everyone else hate them. It makes people not want to be a part of their religions.
Idiots overstepping their bounds. Wanting to integrate religion into a secular government gives fuel to the non religious. History has shown us what happens when governments become theocratic. However, there are still idiots out there that either don't seem to get it or just don't want to get it. The non religious will point this out to those who overstep their bounds. The minority who try to be the voice of the whole religion. While the rest of the people in that religion turn their heads in shame.
Religions have lowered their standards for knowledge of the religion. The contrast to being a fundamentalist is not knowing anything about your religion at all. This is specific for Protestant Christians. They hold no requirements for their followers to join their religion. This enables their followers to know nothing about the religion. This leads to their followers having nothing to teach their children about their religion. The religion then dies off from generation to generation.
There are probably many more reasons as to why religion's followers will be the undoing of everything they have built. These are the few that have been really bothering me. I'd like to read about what everyone else thinks. Will it be the growing knowledge of science that will end religions? Will it be that Atheists are more acceptable as time progresses? Will religions always be and this certainty in one's religion over all will just disappear? Or, as I have stated, its followers will be its own undoing?
