I just became a DJ for my college radio station. I'm pretty excited about this; I love music, and my station (KSJS of San Jose State) is pretty respected throughout the community.

Any pointers from fellow DJs? Tips, tricks?

dont freeze up or start doing the um like yea thing. Dont just do stuff that you want you have to win your listeners over so make it fun to listen to and make an unique personality for yourself.

When delivering your "lines" you want to pretend that you are talking to your best friend, and not x number of listeners. Pretend that you have a stack of CD's, a six pack, and a bag of weed, and you're gonna listen to music. When your imaginary friend comes out of the bathroom, he wants to know what song you played, so you would tell him the title and artist. Don't act like you are announcing, just act like you're chillin' with a homie.

Also, if you find you are being a monotonous asshole, turn off the mic when you get the chance, and pretend to deliver as a character (completely off the air). My favorite is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. I also do Stallone. The reasoning behind this, is that it gives you the chance to be a goof, break the boredom of delivering the same shit over and over again, and renews your energy.

One final thing, watch Wheel of Fortune. Pat Sajak's spontaneous delivery when they come back from a commercial is the ideal delivery for when the song ends, and it's all up to you to fill 30 seconds until the next song.

Then again, WTF do I know. I work for a small-time country station, and I'm not even live, I'm voice tracked. I just listened to what my Programming Director had to say, and he's been in radio for 40 years, and he's worked San Fran, Phoenix, and Chicago

im in a small radio station as we speak :D

dont freak out if something goes wrong and you get a bit of dead air, put on a commercial and fix what's needed.

not sure about your setups, but here timing is everything, and a bit of math skills help with lining up songs and commercials where they need to be.
