View Full Version : A question about evangelical church beliefs
A friend of mine recently suggested i watch the documentary 'Jesus Camp'. I quite liked the movie; i found it fascinating and somewhat troubling.
One scene thats struck me as quite strange, was one in which a young girl was sharing her thoughts on various churches and brought up what was referred to as "dead churches". She had been indoctrinated to believe that "god doesn't visit those churches" due to the fact there was no overt singing/dancing going on inside them, and that the prayers were made in solemn tones.
I've been raised catholic and i got the impression this was the main church she was referring to..and for some reason this really pissed me off. Now what I'd like to know is basically how long has the evangelical movement been around for?
I have a feeling not very long, so why would they have this self righteous attitude towards other sects of Christianity? Especially ones that have been around for over a thousand years..To me it would be like having a child (laying the foundation for their church) and then having that kid turn around and shit on you even though you brought them life...
I guess its because different sects are in competition with each other. The Evangelicals and the Baptists have recieved a surge in numbers in recent years as they make religion "fun" and "cool". These kids have been told that God only favours these types of churches so they will actively recruit more members from their peer groups.
I didn't answer the question though - I don't know how long these sects have been around. Sorry!

"Evangelical" Christianity is a rather broad term. In many cases, it's considered synonymous with Protestantism, and would therefore have originated on or around 1517 (a la Luther).
The church in Jesus Camp appears to be Pentecostal, or some related denomination. That movement is more recent, dating to (I think) the mid-1800's.

I've tried that same strategy with you, SAMMY -
- yet you just continue to pop up on my screen ever-so-often.
That method fails.

You could take an active role and hit his ignore button. But doing anyhting like that in real life is frowned upon.

I find it funny that these people are practicing the very behavior that their god condemns.
Their religion is made of fail.

Well, God is everywhere, but it is easier to feel the bliss of knowing through music and dance.
Drugs provide an incredible syngergy, as well.

It will be, I believe, easier to ask what I'm not.

The views of one girl in a movie created by anti-Christians...
Not all evangelical christians share her beliefs, not even most.
As a catholic you should be far more insulted about how that movie has portrayed your brothers in Christ!

A real Christian wouldn't call anybody a freak, nor would they want to punch anyone in the face.
You, yourself, are being driven by anger and ignorance.

Sounds like we need a good old fashioned exorcism, because surely satan himself is at the root of these feelings.
Masta - do they do exorcisms in your church?
