A lot of religion these days is turning to the belief that there's a limit to the human brain understanding the universe, that we'll never fully understand the mystery so why not humble ourselves before that, as god.
We push back the ratio of science and god, discover universes within atoms but in the end I think we'll be left with a mystery. This is where god comes in.

With the youngsters, sure it's a trend. And they'll go through a series of them before they ever really sit down and actually think about their core beliefs long enough to really get a grip on them.

It's only "popular" to claim a denial in the existence of God when you're an angsty teenager who is merely rebelling against your parents and the system.

As an adult, it's quite unpopular and quite against the "trend", considering that more than 3/4 of the world is religious. You take more flack from being an active atheist (if you even dare risk your professional and social life speaking out against the very trendy Christians), and you find yourself and your atheistic peers being very small fish in a very large body of sharks.

As an adult, there's a certain amount of social and professional liability that goes along with "spurting" out that you're an atheist. I contend that the majority of grown-ups who promote secular beliefs do so because they have a genuine agenda to set forth, one that they are confident in and secure enough with to risk being ostracized by their peers.

I'd love nothing more than to leave those clowns to their own devices, man. Problem is, a whole lot of those people seem to think that they can tell myself and others how to live based on whatever ass-backwards beliefs they pull from their 2000 year old book of fairy tales.
