I've been interested in scanners lately, and am looking to buy one. I have $100 free at the moment, and it would be nice to mount one in my truck. Does anyone have any suggestions for one where I could pick up police conversations, and maybe frequencies such as these?

I really have no idea how any of this stuff works, so thanks for any help.

Nice. Well those are conventional frequencys 156.7 etc.. You need the tone to hear on the frequency.
100$ is fine for a conventional Scanner. I like Uniden. You can buy Radioshack (GRE) too. Ill throw some brands at ya for handhelds:
Information Copied from scannermaster.com
Handhelds
Uniden
BC92XL - does not have tone decoding but is in your price range -- Frequency Coverage - 25-54,108-174,406-512
BC72XL - Frequency Coverage - Includes the most interesting "action" bands where you can hear police, ambulance, fire, amateur radio, public utilities, weather, and more. 25-54,108-174,406-512,806-956 (excluding cellular)
and for Trunking..
BC246T - Analog Trunking and tone decoding, yes you are able to scan Trunked Systems and Conventional Freqs at the same time. This would be your best bet for the Uniden market.
Bases/My Own Opinion
Eh id go GRE if all you want is to scan conventional freqs, but tone decoding is good incase of any changes.
All Information will come from radioshack.com or
scannermaster.com
Now on to GRE :
Handhelds GRE
PRO-82 - Pure Conventional 200 Channel Scanner. But cannot receive 800Mhz
PRO-84 - smaller "hello kitty" scanner, that receives the 800 band (MINUS celluar) and has Signal Stalker Rf as an added bonus. It is a 100 Channel.
All are 100$.
NOTE:Now the system COULD mean anything under the tone has tone capability or it could be that one frequency..check on RR for confirmation.
Good Luck.
