For those of you who are unaware, the Caliph is Arabic for successor. Under the Islamic Sunnah, he would be the chosen leader of the Sunni Muslim (around 90% of Muslims) faith. However, during Ataturk's reforms in the early 1920's, he unseated the Ottoman Caliphate, and no-one has filled the empty space since. I believe it should be reinstated: look at the chaos in the Muslim world. It is largely because the only authority that exists is a bunch of militant leaders. They need authority now.

I may not be the most informed person concerning this, but to the best of my understanding the Caliphate has always been a political position as much as a religious one, and I don't know of any muslim leader with the political clout to assume the title. Having an imperial leader wouldn't do much to solve the turmoil within the Islamic world, because there will still be dissenting groups (Shi'ites for one). The Pope can't do much to prevent fighting in between christians, so I don't see how an Islamic leader could do much better.

Do we really want another pope-life figure? Remember the pope did convince people that using protection in a society filled with AIDS was wrong...

Our kinda pope maybe, but the last thing we need is some dude who is going to unite them.

"They" as a whole aren't violent. It'd definitely take away some credibility from the extremist leaders if they had a central figure

Leadership roles come with risks - if the Caliphate is brought back, it may be a more extremist ruler. Though it may also be a moderate ruler with true wisdom.

The major problem, in either situation, is that the West would likely knock them out of power whether they were extremist or moderate based solely on how open they are to capitalist ventures.

You don't just "knock down" the man who directs the wrath of the islamic world. And chances are, a mostly peaceful islamic world wouldn't want Bomberman as their leader. He'd definitely have to be stern about things such as the Danish cartoons but I really doubt he'd deliberately cause violence. If something, he probably could have told them that it's wasn't the whole freaking country being idiots (in the start anyway)

That only works if they take the guy seriously though. I'm not very optimistic on that
