nah I'm kidding, its Jainism, like the guy above me said. They're an offshoot of hinduism much like buddhism with a fair bit of overlap so you weren't far off. Buddhism's guiding principle is to help all sentient beings happy and push them towards enlightenment, so it is respectful of all life (or should be, well practiced). To correct all mighty sammy, animals in hinduism are subhuman, they are humans who were so bad in life that they didn't deserve to be people, so it is clearly not respectful of all creatures.

Im sooo sorry i didnt know what hinduism preaches that all i knew is that i saw "bubble boy" and saw cows were sacred to them animals are humans (or something like that) cow=sacred cow=animal animal=sacred but after you say this "animals in hinduism are subhuman" you have just destroyed 10 years of attempted enlightenment.

I've never really understood the reason why cows are so sacred, I know that Gandhi used cows as a symbol to represent a united India but other then that I draw a blank. I prolly just got myself reincarnated as a tree (subanimal, karma's a bitch)

cows are sacred in india because at some point killing them would have resulted in the starvation of a large portion of the population. it's a religious belief emerged from economic policy....like all religious beliefs.

As far as I am aware Buddhism holds all life sacred. Hence the amusing but slightly offensive Kleenex ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znnQCXp2iY8) (where the Buddhist monk has a crisis of conscience as the tissues KILL 99% of all viruses).

As far as I'm aware, most every religion holds life as sacred. Conceptions of the opposite attitude are typically based around the spiritual life taking a more sacred position than the physical life (especially in sacrificial religions).

Why would a Buddhist use a product that destroys forests relentlessly?

As I understand, cows are sacred simply because hindus believe in reincarnation, so they believe that a cow could be a relative (or atleast some reincarnated human soul).

The hindu cow thing
they are sacred because they are the animal of Brahma, and a representation of the soul. It has nothing to do with starvation or relativity to human, all animals are sub human except the ones that embody the divine. I checked with my guru (by which I mean the only guy I know who can kick my ass religious knowledge-wise)

Also boozehound, jainism is an offshoot of hinduism with more prominance on respecting life (if you step on an ant you get seeeeeeerious bad karma resulting in a bad reincarnation) so if you're interested start carrying a broom to sweet insects out of the way (yes they do that) and buy into the idea of the soul infinitely reincarnating until you reach moksha (aka enlightenment according the buddhists) to separate from samasara (the endless cycle of death and reincarnation)

I've never really understood the reason why cows are so sacred,

Cows represent mothers because of the milk from them that is used by people. It's all just dumbshit idealism though. You find cows in the middle of traffic in Indian cities; often getting run over and beaten.

Just what else is he meant to wipe his nose with, then? A cotton handkerchief, the kind made of cotton grown on what used to be a forest?

Ever heard of natural cotton or recycled paper?

You can only recycle paper so many times, it still has to come from trees.

And natural cotton is not suitable for farming.

i guess.

a devout jainist will just sit very still and do nothing until he dies however, for fear of harming any other life.
