Hey.

I am currently thinking of buying a two-way radio. I am looking into all this radio stuff, Ultra High Frequency and Radio Horison, although its highly interesting I probally don't know the first thing about it.

So I want to buy a 40 Channel UHF radio, so me and my friend who is also going to purchase one can talk from house to house. We are approx. 2-3 KM apart and we live in a hilly suburb. I was just wondering what a good choice for a radio/walkie-talkie would be.

Theres also some big TV towers on a hill a few kilometers away from me and less than 1 km away from him. Will this affect anything?

Thanks for the help.

Do you need portability? If you do, grab these:

They should be able to reach 3km.

If you want to pay a little extra, you could grab a base-station type model and be able to talk to hams and shit.

You can still talk to hams on a handheld if using a repeater.

do the hams over your way use PRS??
there was some 'interesting' ppl on prs in melborne-- much comedic value, ripping each other off ect.

kind of reafirmed my reasons for doing everything thru .7, 2 m or the ol CDA

Since I don't know anything about policies in AUS, I will keep my USA mouth shut, because here in the states, there are certain frequencies and services that you must be licensed to use. Over here, we have Family Radio Service, which is low power unlicensed, and we have Citizens Band, which is mid-power unlicensed (Since 1970 something) and then we have General Portable Radio Service, which is high-end licensed, and then of course theres ham.

NZ got the same PRS band as AU. exept the post office changed the ch allocation for HF CB to stop cb'ers from talking across the tasman. back then the RI's "got out the shotguns" when a NZ cb'er had an aussie rig or had one that was modded or had an amp ect. under the direction of the govt- issued big fines and confiscated gear. all to keep monopoly on trans tasman phone calls. now with skype and compitition ect. no one gives a shit. as long as no interference is caused cb'ers are almost free to play in the band.

uniden make some good PRS gear. their 'ruggedised' mic has taken much abuse on my part and has come out on top
