Do you enjoy your CB radio? Use it a lot? I'm contemplating getting one for my car but don't know if it'll be worth the cash for the amount use I'll get out of it.

Who do you guys talk to on 'em? Other radio enthusiast? Truckers?

Isn't that pretty much the only people who use 'em? From what I've learned there's pretty much 2 active channels truckers use and then one for emergencies...is that right?

Don't get your panties in a bunch....just because nobody answered up doesn't mean anything, it probably means that the demographic in question hasn't seen the thread yet.

yip, used one. untill got ham ticket. the best bit about 26mhz here is the idiots will buy a 476mhz handheld and not bother with the effort required to install a 26meg rig and antenna.
So that leaves truckies, campervans, farmers, 4WD clubs and the NZ to AU,ect ssb DXers. and that in all leads it to be a useful band.

dont get me wrong the uhf prs band is handy, but without ctcss ect to block out the unwanted theres too many prats on it.

i took my cb out of my car and replaced it with a dualbander, but i kept it and installed it under my hf rig at home. its used mostly to rag chew with a mate who lives further south who doesnt have a ham ticket.

theyre also used to train scouts on setting up and transmitting a radio for the canterbury mountian radio org, for when they go out on high country tramps (saves tying up the 5meg freq and 5-10 CMR rigs at a time for practicing).

with the local 4WD club used by the roading companys to pull stranded motorists of the ranges and passes whrn theyre shut because of snow, and a requirement of the club to have HF CB, and the fact that theres only one or two members of said club that are hams they come in bloddy handy for situations when putting an AREC (i think u guys call it RACES over there) operator in each 4WD or breaking out the search and rescue gear is impractical. ie distance or terain and because in said weather (snow) access to even a half decent repeater site for VHF gear is impossible. the ham club even went as far as to put a dedicated CB rig in the Emergency Comunications Unit beside the full coverage hf rigs. ive even got em programmed into my backpack rig

so yea CB gets under utilised most of the time but then it comes in most handy.

yeah thats right but you can get some interesting conversations with someone on the other channels like recently I was talking with the trucker about how his daughter was pregnant for the second time at 17 and I told him that he should show her how to wrap it up and he was pissed. It was a fun converation. If you want to get a setup for you car put your money into an antenna because that is the big thing when it comes to recieving and transmitting. I did my setup for under 90 dolars.
