I've heard this countless times but never actually any evidence of it. There is specific quote of the Koran or sections or the basic frame of mind of Islam that displays this?

Well, there is nothing remotely close to a simple explanation, but you're gonna see a flood of dipshits posting faithfreedumb.org websites, promoting a Holocaust of Muslims and the like. In reality, Islamic society was, at one point, very modernistic in that it was open to social and scientific development, largely due to the fact that it blended Greek, Turkish, Persian and Indian philosophies into society. That's not to say it was utopian, but it was far ahead of its Christian counterparts. But after several attack from Crusaders and Mongols, Islam society began to stagnate. As Ottoman Empire collapsed and Europe progressed along with the Reformation, the Arabian regions became increasingly arcane. After the Wahhabis took over Mecca and Medina, followed by the Six-Day war, the death of Sadat, Osama's victory in Afghanistan, and the Iran Revolution, an unprecedented era of traditionalism and intolerance swept across the Muslim world. Islam still has backward and ridiculous laws (just like Xianity and Judaism), but it isn't abnormal. The shit just keeps hitting the fan in the Muslim world.

To The OP:

From what I have read on Islam, it's not that much different from Christianity.

It depends how seriously you take it all.
