I am an atheist. I recently saw the following video, however, and was wondering what exactly is the christain answer to this?

www.zeitgeistmovie.com

I am of course talking about the first part of it. I was a non-believer before I saw it and after I saw it I could not help but wonder how people can have faith in the christ at all now.

So watch the vid and tell me HOW christianity can be anything special please.

PS: I have not posted in this forum before. I normally stick to politics as I am not someone who wants to bash religion b/c I dont believe but this vid is really good and I just have to know.

Is that your opinion? I only ask b/c you provide no websites that would address the made up facts in the movie.

Unless you are talking about the bible that has made up facts thrown in...

Nah, just a user post from an old thread. On the other hand, I suspect it was Rolloffle that said it and I'd trust him as far as I could throw him

I really don't feel like watching the movie right now, so can you just state what it is your asking?

from what i gather, the part on religion is a lot of generalization and a lot of rumors and the like are used as facts.

the rest now... if it was the truth it wouldn't surprise me too much

its easy, those earlier mythologies plagiarized the holy bible. DUH!!!

I am, of course, being sarcastic

Someone post a synopsis please. What claims does it make about christianity? I've just listened to the first 5 minutes of it and now I'm going back to watching Serial Effects Lain!

The insitutions of this world are corrupt? The churches are a form of control?
No shit, Sherlock.

Damn, next they'll be wanting to take away our guns.

Getting so a man can't trust no one no more no how.

It goes through the list of other religious figures sharing the same things as jesus. Resurrection, 12 disciples etc. Theres a fucking shitload that they name. Then they go into detail through every point. Son god, 12 disciples being the 12 constellations, bring up some points on the book of revelation just talking about switching to the next century or whatever. Since now were in the year of the fish (jesus fish). Its only the first 20 minutes or something, then it goes its 9/11 conspiracy then info on the US federal reserve.

Interesting stuff, but religious people wouldn't even watch it so ya.

Part 1 - The first part compares alot of religions and their similarities, and how they relate to astrology.

Part 2 - This part is about how 9/11 was a conspiracy by the American government, and how it was planned by the US federal reserve. It also gives other examples of the this with other wars.

Part 3 - The last part deals with who is really in charge of the world and how at the current rate all our freedoms will be taken from us.

Tell me if i got anything wrong.

As far as I can remember, the made up stuff is a few things about the Egyptian mythology. They have addressed and corrected the mistakes on their website, I believe.

OK.

what is in the movie?

The first part and the only part I think applies to this forum involves christianity. It involves the bible.

The movie makes striking comparisions between pagan sun worship, egyptian sunworship, greek sunworship and christianity. It brings up many points in and about the bible that point to astrology. It contends that astrology is the basic starting point for ALL religions.

It makes the claim that Jesus's experiences:

Vigin Birth
Dec. 25th birthday
Ministries beginning at 30
Baptism
12 followers
crucifixtion
dead for 3 days
rises from the dead ascends into heaven

Are all attributes shared by many, many, many faiths before jesus was even born. Horus, and many others that are well documented and in the case of horus written in egyptian stone thousands of years before the "christ" was born.

It points out what exactly happens on the winter solstice (dec 25) and why the birth sequence of many, many, many religious jesus like figures have so much in common. For example three kings is a name given to Oriens belt that lines up in a straight line with sirius (brightest star in the sky) (AKA eastern star)pointing to the sun rise on the horizon on Dec 25th. How the sun stops moving southward for 3 days before moving one degree north on the 25th. How it does so in the vicinity of the crux constellation (DOCUMENTED AND NAMED SO BEFORE THE CHRIST WAS EVER BORN).

Talks about the numerous references to astrology in the bible. 12 tribes of isreal, 12 disciples etc. that the bible gets from 12 astrological signs.

It equates Jesus to sun worship. That is the short and long of it. It does a very good job of it and I have been checking up on its info sources.

If you believe in God's Son I suggest you watch it and tell me what you think of it.

What I've realized (which you don't refer to) is that in the Bhagavad Gita, the Hindu holy book, Krishna is God incarnate/God's son, which is a HUGE coincidence, since Christ is not only God incarnate, but ALSO His son. He could have simply been one or the other, but to take it wholesale from Hinduism sounds awfully coincidental, don't you think?

amirite?

From what I've read on totse, the religion part is a little off. I'd like to do some reading of my own on this, but I doubt that those books cited in the sources are at my local library though.

Some people saythat Jesus' birthday was not Dec. 25 but actually sometime in spring, and will say that it's only Dec. 25 for celebration purposes (whatever that means). Why doesn't the video mention this?

I didn't see anything really convincing. I mean, in christianity's defense, the religion itself has changed a great deal to accomodate the large diversity of it's followers, especially where celebrations are concerned. Alot of people were unwilling to give up their religious holidays and traditions, and so rather than beat them, christianity adapted itself, adopting those dates for it's own holidays/special dates.

Perfect example: Easter.

All I have to say about it is that if you look hard enough, you'll see that
A) Most of the themes in ANY religion are rather similar
B) If you look hard enough, you can find comparisons like that with anything.

Not sure if claiming the bible is rife with pagan bullshit is really a very good defense.......do you?

He's trying to argue that the Bible and Christianity in general changed with the times.

In other words, his religion sold out.

The only religion that has yet to do that is Zoroastrianism; no converts.
