to read the Bible. Afterwards i plan on reading both the Torah and the Qu'ran, as well as a few buddhist scriptures.

But back to the bible, can anyone give me any good parts to look out for? Right now i'm still only reading Genesis, so i still have quite a way to go, but i would still like to know what i'm in for.

Oh, and i'm not reading it for any religious purpose, by that i mean looking for some meaning behind life, i just reckon it would be interesting to read that book that most of the population of the world believes is the word of god.

...but i would still like to know what i'm in for.Well, on the negative side, youre in for some variant of this (https://www.totse.com/en/religion/christianity/sexingodswords192134.html). I'll let the christians around here chime in for the positive side, since I dont have a precompiled list onhand.

About 30% of the world is Christian.

The plot in the book is hard to follow. It jumps around quite a bit. Some advice......DO NOT get attached to the characters in the first part of the book. God seems to lighten up A LOT by the second half. It seems like it was written by more than one person b/c there are tons of plot holes, contradictions and inconsistencies.

It is good for some laughs though. Like the cure for leprosy.....hilarious. God does have a sense of humor on that one. And the whole dont look back thing while I destroy this city.....classic reverse psychology.

All in all it isnt a must read. I would recommend the harry potter trilogy or a good john grisham or stephen king book though. Catcher in the Rye is quite good. Anyway take your pick of fiction.

It was written by many people, across many time periods. The Bible is essentially a collection of letters, stories, half truths, things someone heard off some drunk who once met some guy who once saw Jesus in a crowd and other assorted crap.

...the harry potter trilogy...Must be trilogy in the sense of the Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy.

I don't think you understand the definition of sarcasm.

If you're looking for just a basic intro to these religions... don't bother with the Torah. Just read the old testament... and then check off Judaism and move on to Christianity.

Proverbs is pretty good as is the Song of Solomon... In the New Testament St.John is also quite good.

The Torah is in fact the first 5 books of the Old Testament....

It can be hard going...

It might pay to jump around a bit if you get bored/bogged down. You don't have to read it linearally from front to back. Jesus' words in the NT are done in red.

The Bible is still unfinished. It concludes with God having a bit of smack talk with Satan. Of course, Satan's bit was edited out, due to the fact that he's wittier than God.

Seriously? I thought it was just a compilation of ethics and traditions from the old Israelites.

I guess thats what I get, for not reading the Torah, haha.

LOL, no prob. I think you meant to say the Talmud which is a
"compilation of ethics and traditions"..... Though the Torah is in essence the same thing... only much shorter.

"Most"? Unless the populations of China and India went Christian when I wasn't paying attention, I think you will find that globally, those who buy into the Christian mythos constitute a minority.

To be precise, about 1/3 of the global population is some sort of Xian or other--the largest single faith--if you can call it that--but hardly an overall majority. A plurality, yes.

terribly sorry for that inconsistency there. I suppose i got a tad mixed up, i did mean the largest religion rather than the religion most people are.
So far the book certainly isnt that greatest i've read, and the way it is written is confusing... and fuck there;s a lot of incest and all that... but other than that its all good. I'm rather glad that i'm reading it though, i dont know why, but i am sort of enjoying it

Read the holy Qur'an, I hope God will enlight your heart with it.

The Qur'an, the Bible and the Torah all share a considerable amount of the same material; they all include the 'Old Testament' and the Qur'an includes some of the New Testament, if I remember correctly.
