So my Cool Shit ADD has come around full swing, and I'm fixated back on radio scanning. A while ago someone suggested the Icom R5, but looking at it now, it seems to lack SSB and trunk tracking support. Will this negatively affect my scanning experience? Is it a big deal if the scanner doesn't have these two things?

If you want to listen to your local authorities, you're definitely going to want something that can handle 800MHz Trunking and APCO-25.

Drugs.
The answer to all life's problems.
But check out http://www.radioreference.com and look at their database, see just what exactly your area uses, and go from there. But keep in mind, systems develop, and things can and do change as time goes on. I see most departments switching to APCO-25 in the next 10 years.
