View Full Version : I had Mormons over today

Vegetable Man

Today I had two missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to my place. It was interesting. I got a free Book of Mormon as well as a picture of Jesus hovering above Aztec pyramids. They were really high on Jesus, in the same way I get high off weed.

Does anyone else invite random religious people to their house? I'm going to invite some Buddhists and Muslims sometime. I really want to have a bunch of different people over at once and we can have a big roundtable discussion.

That's what I love about "modern" religious movements; as rediculous as the imagery from classical religions already are, the newer ones always seem to take it to the next level of insanity.

There's a painting in the Book of Mormon they gave me where Jesus is walking amongst the Aztecs. It's weeeiiirrrddd. I think it's kind of groovy though.

My sister got married to one. I don't think she convereted though. When I got to the lobby in the church there was a picture of Jesus with his hands out, it looked like he just made an apperance in Apocolypto. We couldn't go into the chaple, because we wern't Mormon. So they got married on a basketball court with carpeting. Ceremony lasted literally two minutes. Bad food, I liked the punch though.

My buds and Just got back from denver (road trip to see Rise Against/Sum41. Badass concert)

We drove through salt lake cuase my buds wanted to see the temple. They asked me for directions even tho ive only been there one time before, but hey my mormon homing beacon worked.

Best part about being in salt lake city, was blaring Lamb of God and KillSwitch and sometime yelling out at random "Hail Satan"

I hear there is cult around Utah, I think they call themselves

"revived Mormons" or something like that. Basicly they follow christian beliefs. But they take one of the old mormon Ideas. back in the 1800's which was polygamy. Do you knwo anything about that.

let people decide for themself ffs and live your life the way so that it doesn't collide with other lifestyles.
Don't get me wrong I believe in god, but I dont think your should be 24/7 just be busy with god, just live your life like he intended ;).

At the risk of sounding judgemental, LDS is one of the loonier cults around today. I mean, you got your golden angelic plates that mysteriously vanished, the weird underware, the practice of marrying dead people, the polygamy--good grief.

What really amuses me is seeing these LDS cheerleaders running around with white shirts and ties, and little name plates identifying them as "Elder Jones" or whatever--and many of them are kids who look like they aren't even old enough to shave.

"Elder," my Aunt fanny.

As a secular humanist living in Utah I can safely say that most of that is rumours.

The cult lives on the border between Utah and Arizona, and they do live completely different lives.

The Mormons have yet to explain how Jesus got across the Bering Straight Land Bridge to get into the Americas in the first place.

This is true... but Christians in general have yet to explain how a guy turns water into wine, heals the sick, walks on water, and rises from the tomb. Or how a guy gathers up two of every animal in the world and fits them on one boat. Or how a guy can survive inside of a whale. Or how a guy can part the Red Sea. Or how all of humanity, with so much genetic diversity, can be spawned from two people. Or how the universe was created in seven days, despite carbon dating. Or how dinosaur bones got here... etc etc.

I used to think the Mormons were a ridiculous bunch of people... for their silliness of a belief structure. Then one day it hit me, that two thousand years of tradition doesn't make Christianity any less silly. They're all a ridiculous bunch of people.

Some of that stuff has been explained. Like Red sea is a mistranslation of reed see, which actually does "part" during dry seasons. And I didn't think anyone thought the world was literally created in seven days, what it has to do with carbon dating regardless is beyond me. I'm not a Bible thumper either, but I like having my facts straight.

It really depends on the form of Buddhism; just like some Jesuits have attempted to take all the mythology out of Christianity so only the bare philosophy is left; however, the majority of Buddhism is philosophy, rather than the other way around for most religions (Christianity, Hinduism, to name a few), and a lot of the directions that you take in Buddhism don't have to be mythological and that'll be normal; whereas in Christianity, to deny the virgin birth, the ascension, the trinity, etc. is utter blasphemy and certainly unchristian.

Actually, like hinduism, it is the philosophy of finding a way out of karmic bonds and ties through karmic meditation and yoga. By karmic bonds I (and krishna) refer to the cycle of reincarnation which is heavily endorsed by both hinduism, and buddhism, which is a branch of hinduism, embracing sidartha guautama as the 8th avatar of vishnu. So, like christianity, it has it's valid points, but also full of mere exaggeriations only told to strengthen the faith of the followers. People just distort like clay into what they want for their own personal gain.

Virtually any religion will have its mythical aspects, but the core of Buddhist beliefs (that is, the minimum that is required to be considered Buddhist by most standards) AFAIK is just philosophy. Yes, most Buddhists will believe in reincarnation, some form of Buddhist cosmology, etc., but at their core, all Buddhists believe in certain philosophical truths even though the mythological aspects differ from Buddhist to Buddhist.
