I am thinking the cop wanted you to admit you/your family were religious so he could go into a tirad about 'Thou shall not steal'. Doubt its common practice when questioning a subject to find out their religion, he just wanted to make you feel like shit if you were to admit to being religious in any way. I remeber when I was a little assshat, almost got caught twice - both times someone approaching me as I get to the exit and saying something to me. BOLT! Nothing like running through an entire mall parking lot, dashing across a busy street to catch a bus as it pulls up to the stop.
