View Full Version : Moment of silence in school?
As of last week we are required to have a 2 minute long 'moment of silence' every morning at my school so that people can have a time to pray. This is fucking dumb. People do not need to have a time set aside to pray during school. They can pray before or after school, or just find a quiet time during class and pray to themselves. Crrect me if Im wrong, but aren't religious practices not allowed in school? If so then why the hell did they put a time aside to pray? I heard that they did this nation wide (in America), is this true? Do you guys also have a gay prayer time during school?

Simply talk through it. Ask your teacher questions. Talk to your friends and convince them to talk through it. Tell them that you do not recognize a God and find it offensive to YOUR beliefs when they take you to the principle and call your parents.
Try to talk with your parents beforehand as well. Take the fight to them.

Why the fuck does it matter? I mean do you really need those two minutes to speak in a day?
No, then man up, stop being a pussy, and use the time to think of something useful.

The moment of silence is the organized religion in this country SUCCESSFULLY installing a trojan horse of theism into a SECULAR function.
That is why it matters. It matters b/c nobody should be able to tell you to shut the fuck for two minutes so they can pray. So that you can pray. If you want to pray GO TO YOUR CHURCH. Therein lies the problem. With increased decline in church attendance the corporatations of god see a drop in profits.
The fastest way to fill the pews and the best is to indoctrine the young. ALL CULTS try to find young people or drug addicts (AA anyone) b/c these people generally lack the self esteem, and willpower it takes to fight the meme complex that is religion.
If we let them have 2 minutes will it stop there? No it cannot. Theists HAVE to convert non-theists. To not spread the word is taboo to the church. I am saying spread it to ADULTS and not children. There are laws that protect our children for reasons. They are underdevoloped emotionally and intellectually. They lack wisdom. That is why a grown man cannot legally fuck a 15 year old girl. We have determined that she lacks the sound judgement to be a willing participant. We have laws to protect the flesh but by a theists belief the soul is so much more important. We HAVE laws to protect our children from the spiritual vultures (Xtians) in the world. This 2 minutes of silence imo violates those laws.

Why not use the 2 min for personal reflection or meditation?

Why not use the 2 min for personal reflection or meditation?
B/C everyone knows what it is really for. It is for the Xtians who pushed it into the school in the first place. It is NOT for personal reflection. It is to indoctrine the young to pray for two minutes five days a week. Even someone who does not believe will be thinking about god for two minutes. They will be thinking about god for two minutes a day at an institution payed for by taxes taken from the public.
If churches REALLY want prayer in school I have a solution. Tax the church. Tell the churches in America that they can have two minutes Jesus time in a public classroom and put creationist bullshit in science books AND have the ten commandments in a court house. All they have to do is pay taxes.
Watch the church SHUT the fuck up about it. No way would they start putting the money they are taking out of this country back into it in the form of taxes even if they could legally indoctrine our young. They would not do it.
Why don't churches dip into their immense tax free coffers and make private religious schools more cheap?

Of all the magical and mystical virtues, of all the graces of the Soul, of all the attainments of the Spirit, none has been so misunderstood, even when at all apprehended, as Silence.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Matthew 6:5-8 (NIV)

there are 3 kinds of people in your situation.
1) those who are religious and participate in prayer.
2) those who are not religious, but dont really give a fuck
3) those who find such prayer offensive to their freedoms.
if you are really concerned, you can take action, talk to the prinicipal, and (politely) suggest to allow people who wish not to pray to be excused to some place else.
remember, although you find it a violation of freedom of worship to force people to pray, remember that those who do pray also have a freedom of worship, so be careful not to be agressive at those who want to pray.

Dude.... Since I've been a child we've prayed in school, openly, we've had moments of silence, we sang hymns, we've engaged in a whole host of Christian acts, and I can almost categorically state that the majority of people in that school did not give a shit about God, and that most of them are entirely unaware of God playing any role in there lives.
Now, I'm not sure about you, but if an average fucker like me can take some prayers, hymns, and other Christian shit, I'm fairly sure you guys can take some silence, something I've put up with as well.
Now all that shit never stopped me from turning into a rabid atheist in my teens, and then didn't stop me from turning into whatever the fuck I am now.
Basically I can see it coming down to this, if a person is weak enough to fall for this shit straight off with no personal thought, then all the better to the religion. Perhaps if people have such weak wills they should just submit to religion so we can stop there stupid asses from doing stupid shit.
Some people believe more than others, some people find it damn near impossible to believe in anything, this is how the world works. Is it better to try and stop people believing, is it it wiser to refine the system of belief into something admirable and useful to Mankind?

#1. The current US government system = fascism by numbers.
#2. Majority of people = religious.
#3. Imminent pseudo-theocracy?

No. We got a little something called the 1st Amendment.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"

I felt this way for many, many years, the "Live and Let Live" mentality. I know now that my justification for it lied in the fact that it just seemed more humanitarian to leave them be, rather than risk offending people I liked and loved by questioning their faith.
They seemed weak, by my standards, but I felt these people couldn't be held responsible for being what I considered overtly gullible to the power a religion can hold over them. These people actually required the idea of a divine force in their lives in order to cope with the struggles associated (only) with creatures who have the faculties in place to ponder their own existence.
It's tough dealing with the harshness that is end of life, and they lacked something inside them that rendered them unable to face reality without the crutch of their religions to help them along. Believing in a divine Saviour made them feel good inside. Who was I to pull the rug out from under them?
Then I realized that that line of thinking might have developed into somewhat of a superiority complex within myself as I watched myself morph from passive atheist to agressive, angry atheist, feeling that I had a responsibility to inform these people about an alternative view that might help them break free from the shackles of religion. Like I was somehow more mature than them, and they were childlike in their eagerness to believe fairy tales.
That didn't sit well with me, because it didn't seem appropriate to play the role of "Instructor" while simultaneously pissing on their parades and making light of their Hope.
But on the other hand, how could I passively sit back and condone it? Especially when it is so apparent that the only way we'll ever come to a unified, universal understanding and respect for mankind is to be able to step outside of our traditional religious beliefs and collectively examine the phenomena that ANY religious belief system starts out on: the belief in belief itself.
Some people believe more than others, some people find it damn near impossible to believe in anything, this is how the world works. Is it better to try and stop people believing, is it it wiser to refine the system of belief into something admirable and useful to Mankind?
IMO, it's better to realize and understand that what we believe in is not as important as why we believe in it. If that involves dissecting every single belief system until we get to the core of why so many billions of humans require a divine source, then so be it. If they truly have faith in what they believe in, then they won't feel attacked when it is put under examination.
If we're (the secular society) going to be forced to acknowledge a moment of silence in order to regard people's need for prayer, then they (the religious society) should acknowledge the moments of time we ask of them to respectfully pay attention to our disagreements on why assembling in prayer at all is unnecessary, an ancient tradition that can be time better spent solving other problems. As it stands, asking them to recognize that their religious beliefs should be held equal to and with no more reverence than their favorite color, is equivalent to intolerance and infringes on their religious rights.
wtf?
We wouldn't waste time while pursuing real academia to sit around pondering what color we liked the best, or how much we truly love our parents. Stuff like that should be done on your own personal time, not while you're at school trying to get an education.

Jesus made very clear that prayer should be a private thing done in secret.
I see no need for a 2 minute silence or for prayer at all in public.
That said back when I went to school we started and ended each day with a prayer and it did kinda give a start and finish feeling to the day. But it was a Church Of England school so no one expected it to be secular.
I particulary liked the one before we went home each day
"Lighten our Darkness we beseech thee O Lod , and by thy great mercy defend us fom all perils and dangers this night"
And I still pray it on occaision.

A theist can pray whenever they want. They can pray upon waking. They can pray on the bus to school. They can pray at the beginning of every period. When they shit. In the cafeteria.
So why is there a recognized 2 minute silence for EVERYONE to pray/meditate/reflect? I will tell you.
This forces the secular community to participate in a spiritual event. It does this in a PUBLIC place paid for by taxes. The ultimate goal is christian indoctrination of the young. The end result of this is more people turning into groveling wallets.
This is a christian thing. The majority of students will be praying to zombie jesus b/c that is all most of the young minds know about in this xtian dominated country. It is a xtian thing b/c they spent the time, money and manpower to MAKE IT HAPPEN.
If you do not believe that this is meant as a way to indoctrine the youth into Christianity, then you are as blind as they come. This is bullshit and if it were me in your school I would rail against this forced spirituality with ever fiber of my being.
The only time there should be a moment of silence is when somebody at the school dies, in order to acknowledge the loss. Any other time, it's just wasteful and probably utilized as a legitimization of religious nonsense.

Exactly.
The fact that a theist can pray ANYTIME they feel like it, but still demand a 2 minute period in which everyone prays in one form or another, logically leads one to believe this is forced indoctrination. PERIOD.
This is unconstitutional.

I see from your posts there is no explicit instruction for you to pray to a Christian god, even though I assume this is the intention. I suggest therefore you bring a prayer mat (bathroom towel/whatever) to school, orientate yourself toward Mecca and start 'praying' during these two minutes. All of this can be done in complete silence. If you can get a few more people who feel this strongly about the subject to do the same, then all the better.
If the school objects, their "unconstitutional" hypocrasy will be exposed.
This exact thing was banned in Alabama as violating the establishment clause (shall respect no establishment of religion).
Threaten with lawsuits.
