It seems that atheists are often discredited due to their age, as people just assume that they have yet to grow up and mature and to form a true opinion when it comes to religion...
Well, to my surprise, my own FATHER, who had me BAPTIZED as a child (quite possibly my mother's decision...), has a hard time believing in religion. He's about 50-ish.
I was extremely impressed when I heard this, as I expected him to defend whatever sect of Christianity I was raised on...
This was a beautiful bonding experience between my father and I, and I hope that I remember this forever.
I wish my parents would change.
My Grandpa's pushing 80, and he left Italy after World War 2. He's an atheist.
He's way cooler for having shot a Nazi out of a tree and jacked their toolkits though.

My grandmother, a minister's daughter, dropped her religion and joined the leagues of atheists at the age of 69, after the death of her second husband.
I remember telling my mother, who's first reaction was one of annoyance (After all that religion we had to put up with...) and NOT concern about what emotional turmoil she went through to get to this stage.
I believe that she was the only reason my parents got any of us baptised as well. They certainly don't believe in it enough themselves. (Unless Daddy dearest was actually thinking of the traditional massive piss up after. It's wholly possible)
I wish my parents would change.
Same here. :(
My grandpa was an atheist up until he was 63 and had terminal prostate cancer. My grandmother smothered him in prayer books and he was baptized about a year before he died. Kinda like Voltaire.;)

That's so horrible. It sounds like they pretty much guilt-tripped him into believing.
That's what really pisses me off about most organized religions. They will take advantage of people who are in a weakened state or are otherwise more easy to influence.
This reminds me of my thread I made a few days ago about religion being a form of child abuse. It's a form of brainwashing and it's so wrong.

Odds are that he just played along with her to ease her worries for his eternal soul. Then again, he may have just been hedging his bets. Pascal's Wager?

I really have no idea, I could swear he did it voluntarily, but it was likely that he did it to calm her down; I certainly wouldn't put it past him though.
Nah, my grandpa had Communist doctrine instilled into him since birth, he knew all the arguments.

why did he become atheist?
Him and his whole family were sent to concentration camp for some political reason (not racial or national - they weren't one of the targeted minorities of the Nazi's and Hungary was part of the Axis) to do with his family and he watched his world slowly turn to hell, with his father being shot for resisting arrest and I can't remember how the others got killed. He escaped in the snow with no shoes, lol.
He said his experiences 'proved' to him there was no God. (I on the other hand hold different beliefs -very open beliefs of free religion - by the way, I definitely do not support atheism... ..but it's not about that here.)
Here, let me make up for the inconveniance by posting this picture of a very riced out Ford Ute. http://www.streetfords.com.au/images/wallpapers/sf30/ute1280.jpg

Well, my late step-grandfather didn't believe in God, right until the day he died, and he was in his early nineties, when he died, so I guess him...
Maybe in the UK, it's more common for the elderly to lack religious faith...?? Hrmm, this thread seems weird.
My "real" grandfather also isn't really religious, but I suspect he's not really an atheist as such (might be, though?), and is kinda Christian leaning, but i'm not quite sure. He is almost 90...
I'm sure i've met a fair few older atheists, though.

Have fun dedicating the one and only life that matters to some imaginary friend who wouldn't even care about you if he did exist.

I've always thought that, but then I wonder why someone would dedicate that much time just to trolling.
Either way, there is definitely something fundamentally wrong with Rolloffle.

You know what? I retract my comment. It was an insult made too hastily.
I'm not a pathetic bigot like Rolloffle. I refuse to dip to that level.
I don't hate Christians in general. They have the right to their beliefs.
But Rolloffle really is a retard who (I hope) does not represent the rest of their religion.

Agreed. HARRROLLDLDDDD. Do you live near boston? I am in boston now. Send me a message on AIM: Dark Element BF.
Both grandfathers quit Church/Synagogue after they got married, while my grandmothers go to church constantly.
My devout Catholic grandmother favors a much more figurative interpretation of the Bible, while both my parents have realized the religion is a scam.
It really doesn't even matter if God exists or not. Religion is a form of social control.
