View Full Version : modifying the itrip
I've got one of the new bottom mount lcd itrips and well, it stinks. Does anyone here have any experience boosting the range. The only things i have found with google pertain to the old itrip. I'd like to hear if anyone had any success before i go ripping the thing apart. Thanks.

A better antenna will improve almost any consumer grade FM transmitter. Unfortunately I have no specific knowledge of the iTrip.

beats me, I don't want no commiepod.
ok well without regards to the itrip in general, how can i modify the antenna ,which is just a simple wire, to work better.
Nevermind. I soldered a 30 inch piece of stripped speaker wire to the antenna wire of the itrip. This increased the range dramatically. It looks pretty ghetto but will hold me over until i get a cd player.

works for me, simple, but workable

did you verify that that increase of the longer antenna does not put a voltage strain on any other part of the radio-- like the circuits directly connected to it after it leaves the antenna?
as far as you getting better reception.. not really.. you already had the capacity to do that with the receiver AND with a much shorter antenna.. that was cut to the exact length of the station(s) you now get, that you didn't before.
chances are you are ok.. but if you value the item and want to keeps its life span optimal.. then double check your work.
I don't quite understand what you are saying. The only thing it might possibly put more strain on is the itrip not the radio. And are you saying I didn't increase reception because...... yeah I did. The antenna wire is so tiny and short before that you can't even put your hand on the itrip without causing interference and static and now thats gone.

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU MESS UP YOUR ITRIP!!!! IF SOMETHING IS NOT CLEAR ENOUGH ASK FOR CLARIFICATION!!!!!
I modified an iTrip for the 4th gen iPod & iPod Photo using an online guide. I can't remember the site but the mod involved wrapping a coil of single strand copper wire around the internal antenna and soldering it in place. I used a single strand of ethernet cable with all the insulation stripped off. To mod the iTrip (dock connector): If I remember correctly, the antenna wire is exposed on the back side. CAREFULLY pull it away from the back of the iTrip (you don't want to break it) and strip the insulation off of the wire with a razor blade(don't cut through the wire) then take the razor blade and make the spot you loosened the wire from (without breaking it) a little deeper and wider. don't go too deep. now take some 22 gauge single strand copper wire and wrap it around the exposed wire (will take a while but do it right) keeping the coils tight. Solder in place.
lmao, when i first read "lcd itrip" i didnt believe it was a real thing... thought it HAD to be a weird street name for acid or something.
i dont know why i find it so funny that theres a thing called an lcd itrip

do you think it could/would be possible to say rip of the antenna, and solder a wire to a REALLY BIG antenna, and simply start a low power pirate radio station

I don't think so, I think an FM antenna has to be a certain length to work properly. also, the size of the antenna isn't the only factor. You'd need to boost the power of the transmitter or make some sort of external amplification circuit.

I did this to my friends iTrip so that we could piss people off in other cars (but we got a RF jammer later on) you just open the casing, pull out the little antenna, cut a hole in the case so it could stick out and solder a better radio antenna to it. Goes mad far.
is there any itrip, or any ipod/iphone radio attachment that will pick up international radio?

You'll want to remove and bypass the inductor, it looks like this.

That will help with your larger antenna.
