this has to be relevant to this forum, i wouldent trust some fags in Moving pictures to know what a good explosion looks like. I would love a realistic explosion with no gas fireball, but not many movies manage that.
For realistic explosions a movie I really liked was tremors, as his huge pipe bombs just made a nice dirt cloud instead of a huge fireballs.
Hmm good question I suppose. I really have no clue but id have to sayy when they blow the house in Cuba up in Bad Boys 2. It's the only thing that comes to mind. Oh and Swordfish has a good scene where the hostage escapes or something.

also, that bombing scene 1984 dune (when the base was being attacked)was pretty leet, it had fireballs, but it gave me the sense that someones shit is SERIOUSLY being ruined by that airstrike. maybe thats just me though.

The Wages Of Fear (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046268/): The scene where the 2 nitro filled trucks come across a gigantic boulder in the mountain road, and the only way to proceed is blowing it up with some of their cargo. Not too flashy, but unrivaled suspence, and the procedure of setting up the nitro in the rock. Also has the aftermath where right after rocks are landing near the trucks, and this one rock is just about to hit one of the jerry cans.
Amazing film.
Sorcerer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076740/):
Remake of wages of fear, but instead of a rock in the path they encounter a gigantic tree. Seeing this tree explode, shattering into a million splinters is more epic than any fireball.
The movie is overall not as good as the original but is nice just for that scene.
Tremors 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114720/):
The big explosion at the end was one of the best ones I have seen in hollywood. Nice massive scale.
KOYAANISQATSI (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085809/): Nothing beats the Pruit Igoe scene with all the buildings being imploded to epic music by Philip Glass. Also props for real footage.
Raising Arizona (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093822/):
;)

Beat me to it, the explosions in Saving Private Ryan are excellent.
I think the sound techies for that film made the gun 'splat' sounds by hanging huge lumps of raw meat, and then recording the sounds made when they shot them with various different guns. :)

while I thoroughly enjoy(ed) Fight Club, I have to say that scene at the end contained some of the worst movie explosions ever.
Or so I thought.

grr im still out of commision. anyway yeah, the way fightclub did it pissed me off, they tried to make it like it was a controlled detonation of a commerical structure (but not really), but then they said it was a van of NG in the basement.. the first time i saw it I expected a oklahoma city style explosion.. i guess they did it just so it would fit in with that song they had in the very end.

actual answer, im going with the death star, when i was little i thought that was the best. but also another good one was in dawn of the dead in the beginning where you got that aerial view of the city and you see that car fucking smash into the gas station and explode. that was pretty neat...

How did they get such a realistic explosion on such a small scale?
I think I brought it up in a tread before but I just love it so much!
You can tell what I was obsessed with as a kid.:)

AvP, the one where the Predator blows up the Alien eggs.
[Tom Cruise's] War of the Worlds, much as I hated the film, had some brilliant explosions.
And of course Fight Club. Not for the effects, though. Just because of the impact of that last scene. And the TV store's display.

Saving private ryan. The part where the guy is carrying the sticky bomb and doesnt get to the tank in time. He fucking vaporises :D.
Children of men. The opening scene at the cafe. No fireball, no slowly propagating mushroom cloud, just a massive bang, black smoke, flying debris, and perfectly beliveable. It looked incredibly realistic, especially the moments just after it. It was actually pretty frightening.

Terminator 2 : The nuke explosion
Beat me to it.
Also (the movie sucked) but Terminator 3 at the end with all the nukes blowing up the world. That ruled.
Tremors 2 was a good one.
Live Free or Die Hard where McClaine fucks that helicopter up by himself.
Crank when that guy dives on the grenade.

The pirate ship going boom in Cutthroat Island. Tons of wood splinters going every which way = teh goodness.
Paris going boom in Armageddon.
Comet impact in Deep Impact. Absolutely beautiful.
Seismic charges in Attack of the Clones were awesome. As was the opening scene in Revenge of the Sith.
And you guys left out every major landmark in Independence Day? What the hell is wrong with you guys?

Underworld: Evolution
There's a small FAE grenade that caught my attention. When activated, the hockey puck shaped device releases a cloud of compressed aerosol fuel. A short time later, two electrodes pop up and strike an electrical arc, igniting the fuel. The resulting explosion was a somewhat realistic fireball, but a little too big for a device that small.
It makes me want to build one...
it's probably been said but the end of fight club... and then the destruction of parliament in v for vendetta is my second favorite..

Does small soldiers even count?
I think they should have used the characters from small soldiers for a vietnam special forces movie.

Meh, who "owns" movies nowadays anyway? I have a huge bank of them on my hard drive, and maybe 10 proper movie DVDs.

Counting those I have several other movies. But since I got a job I prefer buying them, and having them on DVDs. Means I can play them on my PS2 as well :)
