I am watching this show on CNN, and the program's name is God Warriors. They go into the lives of a couple of Christian believers.

They interview this girl, around 16 or 17 years of age. She is helping out with a Christian rock concert, called "Battlecry" (http://battlecry.com/).

She says, quote "God is fighting for us, against the enemy. It is our duty to be soldiers in his war against hate."

Now I pause for a second. These are Christians, advocating war. Isn't the definition of a Christian as someone who "love's their enemy, and turns the other cheek" ?

I see it a lot in fact. Christians advocating war against those who don't agree with their faith. Now, this is not all, and not a majority of Christians, but isn't it a form of hypocrisy, advocating war?

*hypocritical

Possibly, but I recall a passage where Jesus tells his followers to arm themselves with swords etc.

On a side note, how the hell do you have a war against an emotion?

I don't see anybody being an advocate of violence. As fallinghouse says, it's a metaphor.

She never says " kill those who hate," or even "hurt those who hate."

A teenage girl's verbal labeling of "war" in no way has to include violence, the spilling of blood, or pretty much anything that you would associate with the military or such establishments.

A war against hate is just that. An effort to cease hate.

and that's it.

EDIT: If you know the quote "turn the other cheek," Why don't you know the quote..... "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth"??

"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone"

Take a guess at who said this. No it wasn't Ted Haggard or Billy Graham. Infact I'd be shocked if these words came out of any evangelical preacher's mouth.

Surprise! The person who said this was Jesus Christ.

I am amazed daily at the level of ignorance exhibited by fundamentalist christians. It is almost as if they have never even bothered to read the bible. Maybe that is just too much work for them, seeing as they're content to sit and listen to others interpretations, that reek of hate.

You have to understand the mindset of a person in a mystery religion. They speak in metaphors and riddles, so as to further infantilize their followers. So it should be no surprise they make songs speaking of battle or war, when what they mean is they want to sustain or further their presence, especially in the political arena.

I haven't seen any Christian rock music trump the old-time songs where war is concerned. Metaphor and riddle is rife in this old-time Christian hymn:

Text: Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834-1924
Music: Arthur S. Sullivan, 1842-1900
Tune: ST. GERTRUDE, Meter: 65.65 D with Refrain

1. Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle see his banners go!
Refrain:
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.

2. At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee;
on then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
(Refrain)

3. Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
one in hope and doctrine, one in charity.
(Refrain)

4. Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
but the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail;
we have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail.
(Refrain)

5. Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King,
this through countless ages men and angels sing.
(Refrain)

they all run after the farmer's wife...she cut off their tails with a carving knife.... have you ever seen such a sight in your life.... three blind mice

But we all know deep down that those ornery mice deserved their mutilation.

The eye for an eye thing is Old Testament, and Jesus supposedly repudiated it.

Somehow this whole discussion reminds me of something we used to say in the sixties-- "Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity."

Christians advocating war is NOTHING new. It is not surprising. In fact, I would be more surprised if they did not advocate war.

In the Old Testement Jehovah is quite clearly a vengeful God bent on genocide. He is very much a God of war. Yes, the New Testement is SUPPOSED to supercede this shit........but theists still read it and STILL justify atrocities today with the OT.

Consider the support Bush has from the religious right. Consider his supporters today. Many Christians in America support Bush. The largest group of people to support him.

Muslims have released a holy war on indfidels. Christians HAVE ANSWERED THIS cry, by supporting Bush. Christians are JUST as fucking primitive in their thinking as these assholes. Never forget it.

These are Christians, advocating war.

You say that like it's something new?

Isn't the definition of a Christian as someone who "love's their enemy, and turns the other cheek" ?

No that's not the definition of a Christian at all. It is what Jesus taught though.

Religion is a personal thing. Organised religious movements/groups claiming that they are the "true" ones are a joke.

Yea, and lets not all forget what a hypocrite you are.

Most shims that act like they are against all forms of wars, not only sound ridiculous, they are.

If someone threatened (seriously) someone you loved, you'd either:

- fight right there and then, to defend them.. or..

- think about it.. or..

- regret 'not doing it'..

or..

You don't know what love is, and wouldn't care if someone close to you, or someone you knew well, was in some sort of danger, and you just stood by.

And even worse yet..

You knock 'Christians' (or so-called Christians, like Bush).. for doing the same thing you would do, under 'different' circumstances.

Go play in 1/2 baked.

^ Yes, because declaring war on non-believers is exactly the same as defending a loved one! :rolleyes:

I couldn't have said it better myself ;)

And keep in mind.. I said bush was a 'so-called' Christian.
