View Full Version : distilling sulfuric acid...
ok so i got some 30% h2so4 from the auto parts store for refilling batteries. it appears to be very clean stuff so that's good, but i'm having issues with distilling it. i've been following the guideline i've seen on almost all sites, 110C until you reach calculated volume or see white fumes, but it's taking FOR FUCKING EVER. i'm trying to boil off about 2L to what i calculated would be about 300ml. is it reasonable for me to push like 180C or so to get this done in a timely manner? i maybe got it halfway done after 8 hours at 110, and h2so4 doesn't boil until over 300....
opinions?

Just cook it as hot as you can, it's not gonna hurt it.

You could save some time and head to ACE hardware and get some 98%?

that stuff has aweful buffers and such that fuck things up. ive experienced very near danger as a result and i'll take the road less traveled and follow the other 2's advice on concentrating the good stuff.

wouldnt that give u 600ml?(30% of 2L is 600ml)

Rooto. Very clean.
If buffers are your problem add a tincy bit of peroxide, let react for a long while... then boil concentrate... then distill off the H2SO4 with a retort or proper glassware.
What your doing here is boiling, not distilling since your not collecting what you are boiling off.

Not if it's 30% by weight, H2SO4 is 80% heavier than water I think.
the mix would be roughly 1,25g/ml, 2l would weigh 1,5Kg, 30% of that would be 300g, which would be 300g*1,84g/ml = 540ml after it's cooled down again.
'course you'll never actually get to 100% unless you pump some ozone ond SO2 through there, or plain SO3 ... hah!

Oops, it was lotek.
so does that peroxide thing really work for cleaning it up? will that give me CLEAR acid, or is it just clean in the essential chemical sense? cause i'm pretty sure rooto was one i've tried, and its a nasty brown shit. should i just accept that this is what i'll be working with, or will the peroxide clean it up?
also, things should go better as i've just finished my DIY magnetic stirrer which works very well (= and should be able to make delicate reactions all around smoother
