I've been talking to my roommate about pyro, and it turns out she's pretty interested, so I'm looking for something simple-ish she could start with. I have some experience, have made high explosive before (AP, APAN, I've done nitration) and a few others, but I no longer have any glassware or other equipment.

Anyway, I'll be watching/helping her with this, but she wants to learn to do it on her own, so I'd like some suggestions as to what would be appropriate for her, keeping in mind she doesn't have much in the way of equipment, chemicals are fairly easy to obtain, but nothing too obscure please.

To elaborate slightly, it depends on what you want to be able to do - with blackpowder, you can progress to most basic fireworks. You will probably require a ball mill though in order to make lift quality stuff.

With nitrocellulose its a fun & fairly safe (as far as nitrations go) synth, especially if you keep the quantities down. That would also not require any special equipment really. On the downside, should you live in a built up area, there isn't much you can do with HE other than to bury smaller quantities of the stuff.

Smoke mix is boring, and lots of people appear to injure themselves melting the KNO3 & Sucrose together, flash powder can be dodgy stuff, peroxides are just evil, double salts are a little expensive precursor wise. None of that will stop you altogether though.

Smoke mix rockets. They're very cheap, and don't require much effort. I powder the smoke mix in a coffee grinder, pack it in a cardboard tube salvaged from a used roman candle, and make a nozzle out of plaster. Even if they don't take off, the nozzle helps make nice thick smoke.

Yes, but I also made several smaller ones in the same style. They work fairly well.

I was hurt pretty bad when some BP went off in my face from static, we i was a younger guy and into BP firearms. I dont consider it forgiving. Esp when you guys say its not static sensitive.

It depends on what chemicals you have to work with. How can we know what you have access to? If you have the materials and such start with black powder if she wants to get into ACTUAL pyrotechnics. If she wants to get into blowing shit up then start with NC. Both are very easy to make and only a fucking retard could fuck up the making process. I myself have made fucking loads of NC, many times ive done synths up to almost 100grams and only had one runaway which was when I did one of the big 100gram synths it got a hotspot that i didn't catch. But with the smaller synths you have to be a retard to get a runaway considering I and others have synthed it without even using an ICE bath and no problems.

But if she wants to get into pyrotechnics and also exploding shit start her out with black powder its the birth place of pyro so thats where you should start. Or even more simpler is KNO3/Sugar and you don't even have to do the melting part if you don't want to. If you go with KNO3/Sugar and decide to melt be careful myself and many other pyros have been burned by this bastard ass mix.

Not to lead away from this site, which is full if good info that a person should know, but you need to get her over to APC @ apcforum.net If you really wanna pick up pure pyro and run with it, thats the best place I know of to do it. Help is more than welcomingly given.

I say make both NC and BP and explain their differences. Then show her what all kinds of things that you can make with just bp and then add in the use of NC lacquer and explain its use as a binder/glue. There is an endless amount of things to do with bp chems. I think you can take it from there.

Oh and then make some trimethyl borate and show her some green!:D

Well, in the end we made some NC, about 100 grams or so, and did a few dets, one of which was putting about 35g in a cardboard fireworks tube and setting it off.

Going to make a little more as soon as I figure out where to get more nitric acid.

Also, quick question, anyone know if 50% nitric is concentrated enough for this?
