View Full Version : This is why the bible is true!
So, I was on the phone with my grandmother, and asked her what she thought of Israel. I was suprised, she had the typical sickening John Hagee type ideas about it. So I brought up DNA about jews, and the dual seedline theory, and said it was interesting to me, because it seems like the bible actually predicted that (not that I take the bible seriously, but a couple things seem to be predicted, possibly), anyway, she starts laughing. "Dont you think that sounds a little crazy. Dont let crazy people suck you into thinking like them." yeah.... your one to talk. "Why do you believe the bible is true at all? Other than other people telling you it was? You're saying I'm crazy, but you think it's more likely a 'talking snake' did all this stuff?"
"Jesus walked on water. How do you explain that?"
I didn't even bother arguing. It's stupid. I believe possibly ghosts exist (whatever they are), and definately believe in UFO's, because I've seen alot of convincing proof not because I believe the first absurd story I hear. Anything I believe is based on observing, then coming to my own conclusion. Just because I write a book saying gods son is a flying pink elephant, and saying god told me, doesn't make it true.
EDIT: BTW, a little background on my grandmother. My mom kicked me out once, with no money and no job, and she has a house she got when my great grandparents died (who would have no problem with me living there for free). Anyway, I swore to her if she let me live there I'd get a job and pay her rent, and with 2 extra bedrooms, on a house (she didn't work for) she told me no. Anyway, I'm robbing people and living with a cokehead, with no heat in the middle of winter, and this good christian woman gets her whole church to pray for me, and make me look like a degenerate and have all those people look down at me. :) wasn't that nice of her. Not that I care. Everybody has things they dont want other people knowing, including me, I can just admit it though.

About the walking on water thing--that anecdote shows up in only one of the four oofical approved gospels--I forget which offhand--but that particular writer was notorious for not being able to distinguish from dreams and waking reality.
Cute story, but a myth--same as the "cast the first stone" deal. Modern Biblical scholars agree it never happened, due to inconsistencies in the original manuscript.

I've always saw large parts of the Bible as almost...fables to a degree. Some things in it happened, we can't refute it (ie, historically, Jesus did exist, and was crucified). But some of the other stories were exaggerated to show a moral. Kindof like the parables Jesus taught.

Actually, historians have to remain agnostic about his existence, because there is practically no evidence at all that he was ever a real person.

And possibly some that he didn't, such as Josephus.

I just now googled "existence of Jesus," got 850,000 results.
After checking a few of the sites, I think the concensus is really that the dude actually lived.

Personally, I think someone like Jesus did live, but if he had, you'd think certain contemporary historians would have mentioned it.
There is greater historical evidence for the existence of Heracles than there is for Jesus.

I just now googled "existence of Jesus" and got 321,000 hits.
108,000 for "existence of aliens"
91,300 for "spontaneous human combustion"
11,700,000 for "war of the worlds"
254,000 for "elvis lives"
What does this mean??? Not a fucking thing. Here is some shit that means something:
Josephus is the only historian of the time that names jesus (only 4 out of the 40 or so in the area mention christ, AKA annointed, and only for a single sentence). Josephus's paragraph on Jesus discovered well after his death and highly disputed is the only historical evidence by a historian at the time that Jesus was a real person. Its authenticity has been disputed since the 17th century, and by the mid 18th century the consensus view was that is was a forgery.
Jesus is a myth, just like the galactic emperor Xenu of scientology.

Eh, there probably was a guy who lived, and had some of that shit attributed to him, at or near the time of his death. Christianity basically started as a Jewish version of a Mediterranean mystery cult, and those things always had a charismatic focal guy. So, I think the guy probably lived, the story has had 2000 years to get out of hand.

Actually, there are real passages out of Josephus's Wars of the Jews that talk of false messiahs. Specifically one who came from Egypt and had a fairly large following. Crazies who claimed they were the Messiah or had some prophecy or another were a dime a dozen in 1st century Judea.
