I am curious as to what an American's accent sounds like to nonamericans. To me of course it sounds completely neutral but that's obviously not the case.
I know the redneck "yeehaw gonna get me some roadkill!" stereotype but that is only applicable to a certain area of the States. What does a New Yorker or Californian sound like to a European (or even canadian)? Is it as ridiculous as our perception British accents ("Oi mate spend a quid at the pub roight!" or "Charles I dare say this tea is rather too warm for my delicate sensibilities,") or Austrilians (Throw a joey on the barbey oi!)?

We're exposed to American accents through quite a lot, through movies and TV shows. So to be honest they don't sound ridiculous.
They sound American though, and are definitely not neutral.
when americans speak english it sounds pretty much like if they still had some burger in their cheek pouch.
A New Yaaawker, maybe.
I think the most accent-neutral people are those from the American Midwest. They just have nothing remarkable about their speech at all. Southerners have a drawl and tend to punctuate their sentences heavily with analogies and witticisms, and Northerners tend to speak quicker, it seems. Those are the only two American accents I can really pick up on as distinctly being, well, something.

In the south we say 'ain't' a lot, but there's not much difference from the Midwest in the bigger cities. Once you get into the boonies, then you hear the Deliverance-type dialects.
see the funny thing is that we all base our accents (well maybe not our accents but at least SOME accent) as the basis of the way things should be pronounced.
To most Americans, R sounds like Argh, to others around the world (even to some Americans.) R sounds closer to Ah.
It's all based on our own perception.
oh jack I hope you are sober when you write stuff like this, because I´m beginning to want a baby from you, errrrm, clone I mean ..
You guys speak with very pronounced R's.

I disagree.
"Hey it's pretty haht owtsaide... gunna go have a cold shoh-er"
West Coast, Florida, and East Coast accents sound the most normal to me. Everyone in the middle sounds kind of odd. To me.
People in Saskatchewan and Newfoundland have ridiculous accents also. And Toronto.
I mean Torahnto.

A stereotypical American accent to me is either Southern drawl or valley girl (like Oh-Em-Gee!!111).
Ask most Brits to do an "American accent" and it will be of one of those two.
I had a British exchange teacher for physics.
The woman was entirely worthless as a teacher. We got endless giggles out of her, however. Not so much because we dislike the British, but because she was every single bit what the stereotypical Brit would be.

That's not what this thread is about though.

I do think that being entirely worthless as a teacher does make her entirely worthless as a teacher, yes. Did you read before posting?
and I do think that by reading your explanation that she is worthless because of your prejudices I´ve come to the conclusion that you are more worthless. just as worthless as without trying´s attempt to make me look bad because he needs revenge after he owned himself so many times when he tried to argue with me ..

I did not say she was worthless because she was british. I said she was a worthless teacher. Which she was. It was merely an addend in comparison to the statement on the stereotypical American accent that Brits do. I have met few Brits who were quite so... british... as this woman. But, as I said, that's not why she was worthless.

Are you seriously this much of an idiot?
Actually you know what, I wrote up an explanation as to why you're wrong, but I'm going to just let this sit here. You'll continue to be ignorant even if I spoon feed what Cboys' sentence says to you.
And seriously BSK, if you didn't continue to make yourself look like a retard, there would be absolutely no reason for me to continue pointing it out. 'Revenge' has nothing to do with it. I'd also challenge you to point me to where I 'owned myself'.
And the fact that you can't even see or admit when you're wrong is astounding.

I can kind of see where you're coming from, but not really. You're just making yourself look worse here. The fact of the matter is, Cboys has his own opinion and there's not really an argument you can say that will make him change his mind; if there ever was, that point was lost somewhere between "Are you seriously this much of an idiot?" and "I'd also challenge you to point me to where I 'owned myself'". Just let this go. I have French teachers I hate because they are so damn French. It doesn't mean I hate French people, it just means that I hate how they fit all the negative stereotypes. Some people suck at their jobs anyway. Until you have had the exact same teacher as Cboys, you can't really comment on this.
By the way, you spelled "losers" wrong, at the end of your last post.
Just throwing that out there.
Cboys has his own opinion and there's not really an argument you can say that will make him change his mind
that is exactly the point. I can´t help 12 year old immature retards and make them listen to me when they group together. the same happened when a teacher from a different country entered a class room full of disrespectful rednecks which made fun of her all the time because she matched the primitive prejudices they had.
so if you think I make it look worse I can´t say I care. because once you get older you won´t be impressed by peer pressure of bullies with no brain blaming others to increase their penis size.
whatever her skills were, someone making fun of her being different has no reputation to judge about her because it´s worthless ..

I'll try and spell it out for you, but it's a terrible shame you haven't been able to figure it out yet.
I did not insult her for being british.
I insulted her for being a shitty teacher.
Now you're just trying to save face or something. If you really can't read, or don't want to read, a statement so simple as was in my post, then perhaps I can refer you to said teacher and she can tutor you in English. English english, that is.
By the way, why such prejudice against 12-year olds? Either you have a severe lack of insults on hand, or perhaps you simply think that trying to denigrate someone will make you look less pathetic. Do you think you're better than those 12 year olds? OMG, what a worthless person you must be for disliking someone! What if they don't fit into your stereotypes of 12 year olds!
Now, back to the topic.

and what you my little retards don´t see is that I don´t need to save my face as I only say what I did in my first reply to cboys´ off topic statement. I don´t care if she was british, spanish, german, chinese or whatever. if you laugh at her your perception for anything she says in class will be disabled. you will only fulfill the prejudices I have about 12 year olds in school which make me laugh at you. it´s like as if albert einstein was naked in your classroom and talking about relativity. you immature retards would only laugh because he´s naked and then say he´s dumb and worthless. but what you don´t see is that you yourself are wortless, your mind is too primitive to understand that you are making a fool of yourself, that I´m not talking about prejudices against british or about cut and dried opinions. you can spell your answers as many times as you want, as long as you don´t see that laughing at your teacher´s origin doesn´t give you any reputation to judge her skills. just like when you spelled again that you don´t insult her for being british which I was never talking about. I know it´s hard to give in when you are in puberty and your mind is not capable to understand anything you can´t laugh at.

Anyway, content time:
I've met a guy today who moved down here (North Carolina) from Pennsylvania. It's amusing how much difference there is between the patterns of speech, at least on my side as compared to his. The only really "unique" word I heard him say was something akin to "you-in's" which I think is roughly equivalent to the Southern "yall".
On the other hand, I kept this thread in mind and tried to pick out all the unique words, phrases, and differences in speech that are used in the south. He's working as a Sheriff's officer, but his diction and word choice are markedly different from most people's over the police scanner.
Not accent related, but it's strange the way that different people of different regions approach discussions- he is quite forward and straight to the point, while I am more inclined to talk around until finally getting to the point. I had something to sell him (a holster), and while I often sell and trade gear, it generally entails a good while of talking about nothing in particular before the actual trade. He was cordial, but more direct, I suppose.
I deal with Yankees on a daily basis, but few types like he. I don't consider myself to have a particularly heavy accent, but I could really highlight the differences with this guy, both in accent and actions.

Have you ever thought that perhaps you're the one with a closed mind? You didn't really acknowledge anything that anyone said, just quoted the entire thing and said it was useless and that we're 12.
YOU seem to be the one repeating your own arguments, man. You can't really judge how someone is over the internet--much less Totse. And I'm quite sure I don't jump and scream like an ape in cognitive dissonance. Maybe people hate you because you're stubborn.

now this is the point that I´ll nail you down to and everyone can see how limited your perception is. as a matter of fact it is you - you and cboys, who quote the entire text and then reply to it. I myself only pick out the sentences I want to use for my arguements.
it´s called an own goal and now you can make some points that this is ridiculous, says nothing and go on with your trolling ..

My ex-girlfriend was from Wisconsin, but before that I'd say that if I was pretending to be American I would do the southern one. Now whenever I think of American accents I just automatically think of Midwestern accents. I just can't get over how they pronounce "hot" as "haht".

I agree. I was raised in the midwest and there are very few people with noticable accents, I too consider it to be the most neutral area of the country accent-wise. There are a few words and other phrases that I've noticed just in Missouri, but you're going to get that anywhere you go.

Do people actually talk like they do in Fargo in ND?
and you really think that makes her worthless?
Your comprehensive skills are off. It can't be properly interpreted as saying that being Britsh makes her a worthless teacher.
However, you could interpret it as saying that by being a worthless teacher she was fulfilling her stereotype of being British. That would be a correct interpretation, but in context, is unlikely to be what the writer meant.

I mean this in the nicest way possible but i fucking hate any American accent (Especially the 13 yr old kids on CS:S) There is nothing i can do about it but it just grates on my nerves. Also American's don't speak English. They speak American and i don't like when they say otherwise. I love the country though, But it's just that accent, It makes you sound like complete fucking idiots, Although i know for a fact that a lot of you aren't. It annoys me that a lot of American's think that all English people speak in the same way the OP's 2nd example was like. I am from somewhere near London and i acknowledge that people from further afield in England speak ever so differently, But i just cannot put up with the American accent, i'm sorry but meh it's my opinion.

I mostly speak with a flat accent. Yet, when I'm talking to myself, in my head I often talk in different accents as I find they seem to convey attitude & meaning in a way that the flat accent doesn't.
I have nothing to add to this thread except ask this question. How come, lets say you were brought up with one accent and moved somewhere with a different accent. You pick up that accent. Now when you talk to your parents or something you use your first accent thingy, with friends and oher people you just use the accent that makes you feel comfortable... why?

I am from the midwest, and interestingly I talk in a very different manner than my friends from the same area.
I find that the only distinguishing accents in the states are the new york, new england, and southern(which has many in the category) I find the midwest and the west to be pretty much the same.
However Americans as a whole have an accent, I was in Australia and people could pin me as an American very quickly from my speech.

Do you find that you accent your speech more if you're trying to convey "more meaning"? I know that, at least talking to myself, sometimes a flat speech doesn't convey enough.
I can never get over how singers, however they speak? Be they from England/California/New England/etc always sound like they're flat speakers. Just listen to any singer from England: no matter how they speak? They always sound like they've been living in the Midwest. At least to my ears.
I do find it fun to guess where a singer is from. Aussies? I've never heard a singer that I would guess is from there. Sure: if they're speaking? Never singing though.
My radio was playing just Meg Hutchison & she sang in a generic & maybe slightly Southern accent? I properly placed her as from Massachusetts though. I had to go with intuitive "vibe" though. It's so cool to figure out where music comes from. Especially if you've heard about it, but not heard it? If you've not heard song titles or subject, just what it's like. What am I talking 'bout...just off in my head & sleepless ......

(or even canadian)
New Yorkers sound fucking annoying and agressive; anybody from California, Oregon, or Washington sounds quite agreeable (as it's really the same accent as a British Columbian one), New Englanders sound kinda funny (a little bit interesting, actually, especially people from Boston -- though it is a bit fucked up), people from the midwest sound... neutral, and people from the South sound fucking retarded.

Do people actually talk like they do in Fargo in ND?
I've lived in North Dakota for most of my life and I have only ever heard a few people speak whot sounded like the people in the movie Fargo. One was a woman in either northern South Dakota or southern North Dakota; I just remember I was south of Bismarck. I've also heard a few people in northern Minnesota in International Falls who spoke like that. There are a few people I've heard who speak kinda like that in North Dakota, but it's just old people who are like 1st or 2nd generation American with a Scandanavian ancestry.
There seems to be a lot of people with nasally voices here, but I dunno if that's an accent, or if that's just how they talk. The only things that I've noticed that are commonly pronounced other than they should be are "hot, shower, how" There's some more that I'm missing, but I just can't recall them because it sounds correct to me. A lot of people don't pronounce the "t" in "hot" and don't pronounce the "w" in "shower" or "how". I'm gonna think about this for a while and I'll post again if I can think of more.
EDIT: This woman sounds pretty much like an average North Dakotan, but there are some words that she pronounces that are exaggerated, especially that dumbass song. (http://web.ku.edu/idea/northamerica/usa/northdakota/northdakota.htm)
i think people on the west coast united states have the most neutral accents, unless you're from the barrio.

I wouldn't say American as a whole has any distinct accent. Most accents are regional. eg, new york, boston, chicago, texas, southern US, pacific northwest, etc.

Trust me; you go to ANY English speaking country with ANY American accent, and they'll instantly identify you as an American.

I'm not denying that americans have distinct accents, but I'm guessing they are only identifiable as americans due to the fact that the accent is not british, french, germanic, arabic, chinese, etc etc. I'm only saying there is no singular american accent.
mouth wide open, wet pronounciation of each word and most times head up, even without hearing them I can identify this ..

Why does everyone believe that the midwest has a southern accent? I live in a farming town of 2k people. There isn't anyone who uses the word yall. There isn't anyone with a drawl. I don't know, maybe it's just because I've lived here all my life, but I consider the midwest to have the least accent of any region of the US.
Where are you in relation to the Mason-Dixon line? How far would you have to drive to find a town just like yours, but where people sound noticeably different?

No. Every American accent sounds American, and can be instantly identified as such.
Trust me on this; I live in England and have the 'foreigners ear'.

I'm from NY
I don't have a New Yorkers accent though, A few times i've been confused for a foreigner.
Here,
we've got the "ghetto trash" accent "ex. yo son i be gettin tight" mostly spoken by poor negroes and the women who sex them.
Then there is the other accent,
its almost as if they cannot say the "Th" sound,
some ex.
three - tree
throw - trow
this is how they butcher the words
mother - mudder
the - duh
bathroom -baachroom
them - dem
they - dey
those - dos
butter - budda
nigger - nigga
they sometimes replace the "er" at the end of a word with "a" the "t" sound sometimes turns into a "d" sound alot of people dont pronounce the g in "ing"
we also use "wanna" alot,
wanna go get a drink?
allright where you wanna go?
i dont know where ever you wanna"
it really irritates me
add in all the damn slang we have and it should be it's own dialect.
about every week or so some rapper spits some kind of crap out of his mouth and is repeated throughout my area
how many people know what "shoot the fair" means?
so I'd assume it would be hard for someone with that type of accent to learn a language. ------------ because they aren't even speaking English.

I've always wondered what it would be like if a chinese person learned english by living in the ghetto for a year or so.
Ghetto slang with a Chinese accent! Actually I'd pay to hear that.

Pronunciation of vowels when they aren't meant to be is the thing I notice most and the sounds of some letters change.
Eg. Iraq, I pronounce it "eh-raq", Americans pronounce it "eye-rake".

From what a friend of mine told me who has visited Japan, Mexico and I'm sure many other places, to non-americans/english that DON'T speak english...it sounds a lot like:
"shrshrshrshshrshrshrshrshshrshrsh"
because of our sharply pronounced "R"s and the amount of "s" and "sh" sounds we use. Much like how someone who doesn't speak hebrew would make a bunch of throaty "ckaahk" sounds (that's a really hard sound to describe so sorry) or how when describing chinese, people will vocalize the sound of "throwing silverware down the stairs."

learn to write. learn to use paragraphs. learn to make sense.

I can´t describe how much I don´t care about this troll without trying, as he fulfills all prejudices I have about 12 year old american internet pokemon loosers ..
Self-owned. Before telling someone else how to write maybe you should learn a concept called 'capitalization' and 'complete sentences'.
