I am fond of the book of Leviticus. It contains some of the most backwards and barbaric laws to be found in the bible.

"For I come not to bring peace, but a sword, for I shall set father against daughter, and mother against son, and families against themselves, for he who loves his son or daughter before me is unworthy of my love, and only he who exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisees shall gain entry to the kingdom of heaven."

If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever. (Exodus 21:2-6 NLT)

this one is good too
"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. "
(Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

Hosea 13:16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
John 7:1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
Exodus 21:20-21
And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

Wow, a lot of you guys have kinda negative favourite Bible verses... Why'd you guys like slavery so much?
'Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves fellow man has fulfilled the law.' Roman 13:8
I can't seem to find any of the others I'm looking for. Most of Pauls letter have good bits in.

Focusing on the supposed negative verses keep their view of the bible comfortably secure.
My guess is that they are blind to the positive verses since they are adamant that the bible has no use and want to continue believing that.

C'mon, give it up for Leviticus:
26:28 Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.
24:16 He that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him.
26:29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.
Praise God. Praise God. Amen.

As in life negative has a tendency to outway the positive...I am not blind to the negative verses they just mean a spoonful of shit when you check out God's true nature and examine it as per his written word.
When God says "I love you" tends to mean a little less doesn't it? What God means to say is "I love you IF you do exactly what I say, when I say, how I say, without question, no matter how absurd"
That is not Love, that is an abusive relationship.
I find no comfort there.

I liked the bit where Jesus blessed a whore who washed his feet with perfume and dried it with her hair. I also like the bit where God/the Angel of Death killed every firstborn son in Egypt because someone was messing with his pets.
I'd also just like to point out that chances are Jesus never hid from any Jews- he was one. Christianity was an exclusively Jewish movement for a while, before it started getting a movement in Rome. Also, Galillee was full of Jews. How could you hide from Jews there? It was a district in Judea. Hell, Josephus (who was a Jew) was captain of the military there during the War.

Also, I can't remember seeing Beany say that the Bible is perfect (hell , maybe I dont' pay any attention), but if you're gonna quote the more negative quote at least quote some of the cool quotes, where's the fire and brimstone and shit, let's see God doing something super bad. I mean, slavery quote are hardly exciting are they? You can't really have great enough an interest in the fine nuances of slavery to say these verses are your favourite ones, or do you?
BrokeProphet

I dont think I put the slavery quotes up there...one does not have to have a great interest in slavery to find those quotes to be favorite though.
I like the shit in the bible that you can tell a theist about...and they look fucking awestruck. Your average, work an hour a week tax free, preacher does not even gloss over how much slaves cost or Noah fucking his daughters.
It depends. If you like to poke your finger in a theists chest and say "Your a complete fucking moron and here is why" then your favorite verses are not going to be Jesus teaching people to fish. Or is it?
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
Teach a man religion, he will starve praying for a fish.
I think Esau deserves his own thread.

I am all for discussing the problems of religion, but I find the posts in this thread disrespectful. The OP specifically asked for people to list their favourite Bible passages, perhaps to spark some theological discussion preferably other than the typical “atheist/theist” debate. Instead, they get a bunch of jerks hijacking their thread to show the horrors of the Bible, when over half of this forum is dedicated to that already.
God, at least when Jackketch was here, there would be some interesting lessons in the history of the Bible and etymology.

Granted, the Bible is mostly myth and metaphor. But there is lots of good stuff. Thing is, Jesus spoke mostly in parables and figures of speech that were current and comprehensible to his audience, but riddle-ish today. (For instance, everyone at the time knew exactly what he meant by the eye of the needle--today, few do. But I digress.)
"The kingdom of God is within you." This is essentially what the Hermetic magicians said, and what every shaman and sage and wierd holy man has said. All the wisdom, all the love and courage and compassion you wll ever need is within you right now--you need only find it and use it.
"Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, and all else will be added unto you." In other words, look to your spiritual growth and the material side of life will take care of itself.
"All these things I have done, ye can do also--all these and more." In other words, Jesus was saying he was nothing special--anyone can perform miracles. We are, all of us, on the road to sainthood. Spiritual growth is not only essential, but also inevitable.

Matthew 7
1
"Stop judging, that you may not be judged.
2
For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.
3
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?
4
How can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove that splinter from your eye,' while the wooden beam is in your eye?
5
You hypocrite, 3 remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye.
12
"Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.
21
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
22
Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?'
23
Then I will declare to them solemnly, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.'

Tough:( Genesis is an interesting choice! Why?
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.

The verse I quoted was from Matthew, I think it might be around chapter 12 though. I found that quote, and a LOT of other ammo against christians, in Robin Bank's The Hardcore/Punks Guide to Christianity, which can be found in its entirety here: http://www.diy-punk.org/diyfiles/hcpguide/ .
Though its written to try to dissuade punks from christianity using the reasoning that christianity is anti-punk, it pretty much works with anything.

Jesus christ (no pun intended)...That's fucked.
It's not even belief at that point - it's just essentially shock therapy. The kids' brains (I imagine) would associate not believing with punishment, and so they would therefore believe.

I forgot to post my favorite excerpt:
"For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one does, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity. All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust."
