WOW, amazing writeup and project, thanks for posting it. Wish I had the time and funds for it. Don't know what I'd use so much sodium for, but with such a cool way to make so much of it, why not?

I was about to start bitching about how old this concept is until I actually read the link.
Bad fucking ass.

Yeah. The same guys doing a bunch of similar writeups on other chemicals too, I haven't looked into the others yet, but I'm sure they will also be excellent.

There is one on chlorine and one ether which is great too !

nice.
didn't understand most of it (hell, i didn't understand anything to be honest).
looks like the person who wrote it up is an australian.
nice to see australian 'scientists' contributing.

Yeah that will work, but I dont have a nickel anode or most of those supplies at my home.

haha, puts my lame hotplate + copper wires + battery charger setup to shame! I never got usable amounts the few times I did this; I just got a few tiny chunks of Na. But it was fun to toss in water!
This looks like a fun project for the winter...I'm a bit busy now, but I will definitely look this through and ponder it.

Looks like you'll need a legit power supply to do it though. Damn. Any ideas?

A computer one would be more than ample.

40-50 amps? damn, need to find me a pc power supply like that!.

Two or three in parallel? .. IIRC the 5v output is at least 20A and you can tweak the voltage higher if you dive into the electronics quite easily ..

Says that +5V is 30A, but that still leaves you with the problem of regulating the voltage. You need to "dial in" your voltage to fine-tune the temperature of the unit. So you could use two PSUs but you are still left with the problem of adjusting it.

Takes a bit of electronics know-how, but a pretty simple mod ..

you can't honestly tell me you have a hot plate that gets to 801 celcuis to preform a molten sodium chloride electrolosis

It's electrolysis of molten sodium hydroxide ..

Any decent PSU will pull circa 45 amps.
Read the sides on a few - mine will do 50 on the 5 volt rail.

I'll look more at that other PSU mod suggested tomorrow. There may yet be hope here...Not sure how I'm going to go about fine-tuning the voltage though. Probably splurging on a REALLY nice rheostat.
This might sound retarded, but I just have no clue as to what is the use of sodium metals in pyrotechnics? Am I missing something? besides a cheap thrill of throwing a big chunk in the water, or making a kewlish pressure bomb? What will you guys use it for once you make it??

well you can either use it for drugs, explosives that most people don't have the capability to make (sodium azide), or cheap thrills. I would like to see a sodium flash powder though.
or of course do gooder organic chemistry that no one cares about

If you ran out of table salt, you could throw your Na into some HCl.

If you have excess of sodium azide. and you do not need it for something better- making lead salt, for instance - put some parafine in test thbe, mrlt it, put sodium azide in it and continiue with heating. When in test tube all the salt is converted into metal - it's sodium! Easy, but great pitty for azide....

I'm sorry, I misjudged. I have sort of a knee-jerk reaction to shady things like that. Too often we'll get a suggestion like "boil it in alcohol over a flame."

If you look at post "Pure sodium" from SLT, you will see that thing that I said is corect. And I did it many times. It works. Sodium azide decompose at heat to nitrogen and sodium without some violent reaction or even explosion. I made typing error typing "mrlt" instead of "melt", and I did not realize it. Thar's only difference between "my" method and method from SLT and Wikipedia. Sodium azide decompose slowly at moderate heat. It must be done under molten parafine. I am not guilty because I live in country in which you can buy kilos of sodium azide and no sodium. And I did not adviced him to pour both liquids out from test tube. You must wait till it gets compleetly cold, break test tube and clean your sodium without touching it with hand.
If I posted twice it was because I was checking SLT-nickname at other post..... And I did not copy, it is from personal exprrience.....
Of course if you heat sodium azide in air - it will ignite and make orange firework in kitchen, but NO explosion, if you did it with gram or two. Do not ignite 100 grams or so....

Hmm, I can see it now:
Metal pot with lead poured on the bottom, heat coil for steam through the sides, winemaking-style gaslock on the lid ...
I whish I could buy pounds of azides :(
