WOW.

Anyone know much about this religion? My friends and I have begun to delve into the teachings of this religion and it appears to simply be very, very, bad science fiction.

For saying that I will be seen as a SP with a possible confused cluster of thetans in my body or a body thetan, who has been unable to throw off the effects of R6. As an SP the church can attack me with any means due to the FG paper written by LRH. This can all be found out by submitting to auditing and gaining Tech.

This is how they speak. This is the type of jargon they use. Very fucked up religion. My friend and I are talking about infiltrating this religion with a vid camera and un-covering more of it's hilarious bullshit.

ANyone know anything else interesting about the cult scientology?

I've never met a practicing Scientologist, and unfortunately the only impression I've ever had was of the celebrities who are neck-deep in it. I remember reading Dianetics back in the 10th or 11th grade - not realizing at that time that it was the foundation for a cult-like religion in the making.

Of course, there's been the scattered internet comments on Totse before, but it was usually just making fun of Xenu and L.Ron. I DO remember reading a debate (maybe on here, maybe another board) about L.Ron Hubbard's son, and the crazy childhood he lived through.

Hopefully a *real* scientologist will enter this thread and give us a low down of the FAQ's. Reading about it from scientology.org answers a FEW questions - but a first-person account is always better. I was going to do the OCA personality test (http://www.scientology.org/oca.htm#) just to see what the results would be, but read the fine print and found out that the results are forwarded to your LOCAL church of scientology. I backed out of the test with the quickness.

Have you taken the test, BP?

I did some research on Scientology once, and the more you delve into their secrets, the more disturbing they get. You move from thinking they are a joke to realizing that they are a very dangerous, and very scary cult. People have actually died because of them: for example, they once locked an ill woman in a room and fed her nothing but vitamins. She was found malnourished, dehydrated and dead.

In all honesty, I would not be so openly critical, if I were you, unless you were certain that they could not trace your message back to you. If you get labeled an "SP", they will make your life a living hell. I have ran into a couple on irc, and I just make a thing of it to disconnect from the network for awhile.

Not yet, and for the same reasons. I am planning to however. My friend downloaded a bunch of official scientology books and papers off of torrent sites talking of the different grades and training manuals for how to be an auditor. It looks insane.

In the books the auditor is instructed to ask ONE question and read the E-meter when the Body Thetan responds. There is to be NO follow up question to the answer given, no matter what. The questions become insane as you progress through the 4 levels of auditing.

Example of questions:

Have you ever failed to change somethimg in the universe?
Have you ever failed to alter someone else's memory?
How do you feel?
Have you ever not failed to change something in the universe?
Have you ever not failed to alter someone else's memory?

I need to read more to understand HOW to read an e-meter and checked on E-bay for one. There is ONE e-meter for sale for 5,200 dollars. My friend has books on how to make an E-meter that I have not read yet. I believe it is a simple resistance meter that gauges how hard you squeeze on the handles you hold.

At one point the auditor's manual gave instructions for a type of auditing where the body thetan makes a clay replica of himself and places it on the table. The auditor takes the respondant through a series of tests involving moving around and presenting obstacles to this clay replica.

It is just funny to think of Tom Cruise doing all of this shit.

The costs involved in joining this organization seem awfully inflated. I agree with Hare - I'd be super cautious in your investigation, and make sure someone you know well knows what you're getting into ... in case something should happen.

Taken the personality test, used an e-meter, talked to a scientologist at the 'JOIN SCIENTOLOGY' tent at my city's "(insert city) Day". They're cultists and they prey on the ignorant and the hopeful. BP- you're right about the E-meter. Me and my friend discovered this when we took the E-meter test and squeezed the cones. Basic electrical apparatus (measures flow of electricity, I would imagine) and the harder you squeeze, the better the contact (and thus flow of electricity).

With the test, though, I took it during a philosophy class at my Highschool. My genius of a teacher only revealed what it was after we'd done it, and then went into how these organisations work.

Edit: Never ever ever give them any real details about yourself. Ever. Don't ever give them money. Don't ever go into their churches.

Double edit: If you want to get their attention, make yourself look like a mark by saying you take Ritalin and are a victim of psychiatry. They vehemently oppose psychiatry (ever hear about the "Psychiatry: Industry of Death" gallery?).

L. Ron Hubbard is my fucking idol. The dude lived on a boat, on which he had an unending supply of drugs. Plus, he had a bunch of young teenage girl slaves as well.

Not to mention, he managed to convince millions of people some of the most ridiculous shit, and conned them out of tons of money. I know that Christianity has done the same thing, but on a grander scale, but for someone to pull something off like that in this day and age? Fucking impressive if you ask me.

How, has anyone, in the history of the world, even come close to such epic coolness?

I try to stay clear of scientologists. They seem a little "crazy" to say the least.I've heard of too many deaths associated with their cult.I belive that if someone tried to infiltrate their religion for whatever reason( News reporter for example) they would'nt hesitate to kill them.Of course, I don't know too much about them so I could just be paranoid.

Yeah seriously I read about the boat and sex slaves, if you think about it, it took Christianity hundreds of years to gain popularity and power, L.Ron did it in his lifetime.

My bad. Apparently he was charged with fraud by the french government shortly before 1980, but Hubbard's attorney appealed it and won.

He was attended by "Commodore's Messengers," teenage girls dressed in white hot pants who waited on him hand and foot, fixing his shower and dressing him and even catching the ash from his cigarettes.[10] He had frequent screaming tantrums and instituted brutal punishments such as incarceration in the ship's filthy chain-locker for days or weeks at a time and "overboarding," in which errant crew members were blindfolded, bound and thrown overboard, dropping up to 40 ft. into the cold sea,[10] hoping not to hit the side of the ship with its sharp barnacles on the way down.[10][79] Some of these punishments, such as imprisonment in the chain-locker, were applied to children as well as to adults.[10]

He was a sociopathic cult leader just like Jim Jones. Jones did what he did b/c his shit was falling apart, he had an american congressman killed in South America and shortly after that fuck up, he had his followers kill themselves.

Oh I know plenty about Jim Jones.

In fact, the Jonestown murders are what I was researching when I found Totse, believe it or not.

Anyway, I idolize L. Ron Hubbard for his accomplishments, and for a lot of his lifestyle choices (although not all of them), but I don't necessarily agree with everything he did.

He isn't perfect. I might have been exaggerating a bit when I said I consider him to be the very epitome of coolness (or however I put it).

Idolize is a pretty strong term - what about his accomplishments do you find so endearing? If it's the gaggle of teenage girls aboard his yacht that catered to his every whim, then I'd suggest delving into The Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous and researching other Pimp-Daddy-ish millionaires who made their fortunes the good old-fashioned way. At least most of them weren't subject to living the final years of their lives in hiding to stave off public humiliation and financial persecution.

If it's the money that he managed to swindle out of his followers, then that is really no major feat either. Having formulated a religion-for-profit that turned out to be successful doesn't necessarily point to any unique doings on his part - but more to the gullibility of the human race, and their eagerness to completely sign over their hard-earned dollars to someone who promises them everlasting life. It's testament to the vulnerability of the masses moreso than the ingenuity of the author.

Jesus probably could have achieved the same profitable notoriety, had he played his cards right. But it takes a bigger man to achieve fame and followers with a pro-bono strategy, and ensures a more diverse following who will probably be in it for the "long haul". (2000+ years after your death is quite a long marketing campaign).

But who knows? Scientology may morph into a non-profit yet exclusive club religion before it's all said and done. Having major figures with verrrrry deep pockets (think: Cruise, Travolta) championing the organization - it's only a matter of time before they realize that the only surefire way to cement Scientology into mainstream society would be to make it available to "the poor, the tired, the weak masses" - versus those who can afford the expensive auditing and high-dollar exposure to the LRH library.

That scenario will be plausible only IF they don't go completely over-the-top with some kind of Thetan backlash against the non-believers who laugh at them. It also has the potential to turn into a really, really nasty version of Jonestown or Waco, on a much larger scale.

I guess this is pretty much the gist of it.

I don't know, it's just kind of a combination of how he did it and what he ended up with. But not every single aspect.

But yeah, I just always had this dream of living on a houseboat when I was younger. Plus the thought of having the gaggle of teenage girl "slaves" is probably attractive to just about any male (well, depending on the exact age I guess). Then you have the drugs. He had what seems like an untouchable hoard of drugs, like nobody would arrest him for it. At least that's how I picture the fantasy in my mind. Add to this the charisma he must have had, and you just get a combination of everything I've ever dreamed of having.

It's a thousand wonders Kurt Vonnegut didn't steal the stage with his rendition of Bokononism. Imagine having Cat's Cradle to thump at a pulpit while convincing adherents that it's The Way To Go. :D

And we all know that Vonnegut had more charisma in his big toe than L.Ron had in his entire character.

RIP, Kurt!

I wouldn't give any real information, and most certainly wouldn't agree to anything or give them ANY money.
I was invited along to some sermon or something, and i don't think it could really hurt all that much.
The closest church of scientology is about 45 minutes by bus from my house so it could just be a fun day, full of lulz at the scientologists.

You can find accounts of this all over the news or net. Scientologists will pretend to be county officials and inform your neighbors that you're a sex offender, they'll sue your ass off, and there have been a few instances where they've been said to have killed people (far off, but they are a cult...).
