I cant for the life of me think of what they called it when people would go to the church and buy a piece of paper saying they were forgiven. Any help appreciated.

Both the above are correct.

However an Indulgence doesn't actually forgive sin, it just remits time in Purgatory.

ie the more you earn , the less you burn.
