View Full Version : I despise subs

Yea, thats right, subs.

I can never watch any anime with subtitles.
Maybe it was me growing up with adult swim's dubbed anime, but I'm hooked on it.

Anyone else like this?

The only good dubs I've ever watched were Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and FLCL.

Most dubs have stupid character voices, mistranslations, and a ridiculous amount of things changed to make the show suitable for American TV.

I'm looking at you, One Piece.

Fucking truth. I HATE English dubs. I don't watch One Peice, but I do recall that the main character (Luffy was it?) sounded like a retarded girl thing.

So I guess it works out, cause I liked all the dubs

Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, GITS, DBZ, and maybe a couple more are th eonly ones I know of with decent dubs. I dont think I could watch RM without the subs. *shivers*

FLCL

This is the only anime that in my experience I enjoyed more when dubbed.

And possibly Fullmetal Alchemist too.

Rozen Maiden I'm guessing, may be wrong.

But, I love subs.

I feel awkward watching dubs now.

If you only watch dubs on cartoon network then you're missing all the good stuff.

You get used to subtitles pretty fucking quick when you watch foreign media.

Either way, a show is destined to have stupid fucking voices, because apparently no one can talk like a normal person in these settings...

With dubs, yes there are mistranslations and often rewriting of the lines to make things more appropriate... But if you've watched enough dubs/subs you can tell what was meant to be said and what is really going on.

I don't think anyone can rationally argue against either without it coming down to 100% preference or fanboy/girl-ism.

i've never rly had a preference as far as subs vs dubs.

i suppose that dubs is my favorite, the ones that i watch most are usually whatever's showing on adult swim or (recently) the sci fi channel. i guess i've just gotten used to hearing english voices in anime.

i'm always downloading lots of stuff that's subbed though and i've developed a fondness for that too. i like the way the japanese language sounds and sometimes i even pick up on words and phrases here and there. sometimes a series or movie also seems to make more sense in japanese than engrish.

i guess it depends on which i've watched first for a given series. like cowboy bebop and trigun...i saw those in english first so, when i try to watch them subbed, it doesn't feel right and i can't get used to it. same thing with bleach. i originally downloaded it in japanese so, when it first came out on adult swim, it took a while to adapt to that.

Yea.

Seriously, have you heard how bad it is? For fuck's sake, Suiseiseki doesn't even say "desu" or some other catchphrase.

Nori/Hina arent terrible, but come on... (I will admit Suiseiseki's laugh is way less annoying with the dub, though. :o)

The only anime I refuse to watch dubbed is Konjiki no Gash Bell (or Zatch Bell in english, I just think that Zatch sounds retarded)

I watched a few dubbed episodes and had to stop in the first 5 minutes, cry, and immediately look for a subbed version.

Edit: don't really watch other dubs if I can help it, but if I'm really into a series and can only find an episode dubbed, then I'll watch it.

I started off hating subs mainly because i watched anime dubbed. But i started watching Wolfs rain subbed off the internet then rented the dvd, i was amazed to find out that i actually picked the subs over the dub even though it was right there. But i go both ways on this topic some i like dubbed and some subbed, i count imagine Death Note in English, light's laugh made the show for me it just sounded to evil.

It does kind of suck that you are stuck staring at the bottom of the screen the entire show, i miss a lot of the action.

Come on, the dub on Iron Chef is brilliant.

I do like the subs on Orachuban Ebichu though, that explain obscure cultural references.

Dude you're a dip shit. You can argue the fact, because here in America voice actors suck balls. Then to say that translations don't mean anything...tell me how many languages do you speak? Translations are VERY important in getting meaning across, and there are some very deep Animes out there. It would be a crime to do a half ass translation of them...

i've never rly had a preference as far as subs vs dubs.

Dubs fucking blow...period. Even FMA to me had shitty dubbing. DBZ was the only exception and that is because I saw it before I even knew what Anime was and that it was coming from Japan. Subbing to me is the only way to go...besides learning Japanese. Unless a big studio picks up some good actors and spends the money to do the dubbing correctly.

I agree with the Ebichu 100%. I would not get half what it is talking about. And to further the point, there is one episode of Naruto filler (shudders), that the subbed version explained, then cartoon network didn't. The show didn't make any sense with the explanation.

meh. it's all about preference, mang. some people like dubs, some people hate them, some people like to get on the interweb and fight about til they get carpal tunnel.

it's silly to argue about. people are just gonna watch whatever the hell they want.

dbz was one of the first series i watched and i can't even stand watching the sub. too used to the english voices. same with fma...i watched the whole series adult swim, but missed the last two episodes during it's original run. so i went out and dowloaded them and teh movie. the subs were pretty good, but it took some getting used to.

Dark_Magneto
2008-02-07, 18:05
DBZ was a good dub because the original voice actors didn't fit their characters. Apparently they thought it a good idea to use high-pitched seiyus for big burly men. Conversely, the voices in the english dub fit the characters rather well.

Cowboy Bebop was a great dub as well. The Japanese even prefer the english dub of CB over the original.

That being said, there are very few good dubs and a plethora of bad ones. Most dubs are bad.

As a One Piece fanboy to the max, it is my pleasure to inform you that 4Kids lost the license to One Piece which has infact been picked up by FUNimation Studios.

No more complete story fuck up or stupid kiddy bullshit. The DVDs are being released form the very beginning of the series uncut. This has been nothing more than a godsend for me. I hope you're as thrilled about this as I am.

EDIT: Ok now that I actually took time to read through the thread, DBZ and Cowboy Bebop are easily agreeable to be better as dubs. I'll admit to that. FMA, not sure... I watched the Jap version the whole time.

Honestly, because it's a foreign type of media, there are foreign type of jokes and culture references in them which honestly I enjoy very much. It's when they fuck it up and try to use cultural references from America that just make the show absolute dogshit.

Also for any Hunter X Hunter fans out there... the series returns March 9th!!! And I didn't even have to wait 2 fucking years this time! FUCK YEA!

This. Plus the voices in subs sound gaspy like they all have asthma or something. And in English the emotion based on the tone of the voice is easier to understand.

The only anime I watched without subs was Robotech. Best anime of all time!

Lately (4 years ago??) I used to watch Samurai X with subs... I rented the OVA it had the english dub. It wasnt worth watching till I switched over to the original dub and english subs.

Everything just sounds crap these days.
The voice actors they have for english dubs are just too... gay, childish, gay and cheesy and gay and childish. Did I mention gay?

I couldnt watch a single episode of Gensomaden Saiyuki without the subs.
