Why's everyone making a big deal about it? What do they believe in, and how is it 'wrong'?

I looked it up in Wikipedia, and saw a bunch of quackery about the body and mind, and how they're against psychiatry... But are they really such a threat to us?

Judge Breckenridge, Los Angeles Superior Court:
"[The court record is] replete with evidence [that Scientology] is nothing in reality but a vast enterprise to extract the maximum amount of money from its adepts by pseudo scientific theories... and to exercise a kind of blackmail against persons who do not wish to continue with their sect.... The organization clearly is schizophrenic and paranoid, and this bizarre combination seems to be a reflection of its founder, L.Ron Hubbard."

You don't have to search very hard to find out for yourself what scientology is all about.

It was written by a science fiction author. I thought some of the stories in the bible were rediculous until I heard about Scientology. It's rediculous, without even mentioning that it's all a huge scam.

Scientologists use methods that are opposed to most people's values in order to convince people of things that mainstream society considers impossible so that these converts will do things that most people think are unwise. It's quite simple really.

Pfft, the bible was the first science fiction book ever.

Hubbard just copied it :D

But kudos to Hubbard for profiting on a book! Yay authors!

Scientology = Neo Cyber Punk version of Christianity

Kinda cool really, in a fucked up crazy kind of way.

I disagree with the beliefs of Scientology, but aside from that: they charge for their 'healings', and more than that, they blackmail those who realize it's complete bullshit.

where's the cool technology and evil corporations?

But, from what I've heard, Scientologists don't believe in charity, no matter how wealthy they are. If true, then it's just an excuse for insanely rich actors to keep their bloated paychecks to themselves and still be able to feel good about themselves.

Yes, but that is not the reason organized religions, and Scientology in particular, are inherently wrong ... they all have unique corruption. Depending on the unique situations of the society subscribing to the religion and if the beliefs have become corrupt or not, being completely based on lies may have no effect on the religions potential to do good for that society.

That is not to say that it is wise to blindly follow the rest of the flock and never question what you are told. It seems that corruption is unavoidable within organized religion, and that blindness is all that allows the corruption to contribute a negative effect on society.

The problems with organized religions are not the lies which any may be based on.

It is their request that they are to be followed without question, and the choice of the people who agree to do so which allows problems to exist. It is the unique way a religion has fallen corrupt, and the followers inability to see this corruption, that creates those problems.

they charge for their 'healings', and more than that, they blackmail those who realize it's complete bullshit.

This is the corruption of Scientology.

That sounds an awful lot like Christianity.

You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion.
Response to a question from the audience during a meeting of the Eastern Science Fiction Association on (7 November 1948), as quoted in a 1994 affidavit by Sam Moskowitz.

Are the beliefs to out there for you, christian?

I find it refreshing they charge up front for their services, rather than guilt and shame a human being into handing over their money. Some of your brethren charge to heal the more naive members of your religion.

rather than guilt and shame a human being into handing over their money.

Good point.

That is why the Catholics/Protestants dominate the world. Their religion is vastly superior in terms of "fleecing" the "flock" (Pun intended).

Well it's not just that I think their beliefs are ridiculous, I think that about most religions. The thing that sets Scientology apart to me is that it's financially and psychologically damaging to the people that get involved in it.

That, and Battlefield Earth was one of the worst movies I've ever seen and I resent the whole religion for having watched it.

I find that all religions are financially and psychologically damaging to the people that get involved in it.

Perhaps some more than others but I would describe this as smoking a light cigarette instead of a full flavor. Doesn't change the fact that both damages you, one does so arguably a little bit less.

It doesn't matter how far out a belief is; it is whether it produces a positive effect. My beliefs, as most would see, are further out than those of Scientology...but I have received a positive effect from the utilization of these beliefs that is nothing short of miraculous.

I am host to mental, emotional, and physical disorders that are seen as completely incurable...yet I no longer am affected by them. I paid no money for help, received no treatment for them, and spoke to nobody about them...my mood is balanced, I no longer drink nor drug, over-eat nor vomit, suffer from chronic back pain, suffer from flat feet, suffer from sexual attraction towards children, suffer resentment nor fear, suffer guilt nor shame, nor obsess over problems, nor desire to die. Through a plea towards God I was healed. After this healing, I have communicated my every question and thought to God and have thus far lived a life infinitely better than what I had prior.

You will think me a liar; were I in your shoes, I would think the same.

I'm dead serious, for the next week or so my feet kept cramping and cramping; when the cramps finally stopped, they had both developed arches. The muscles that holds the arches hadn't been working for...well, birth...so when it finally did, I suppose it had to deal with some severe cramps.

Pre-pubescent or post-pubescent(teens)?

Pre...I've honestly stated here before that I was pro child-porn. While having never been in the position of molesting a child...that was due more to the fortune of not having had the opportunity. Today though, I can actually trust myself around young teens and children...I don't have to hide from friends with kids and all this other insane shit I once had to just to stay out of prison and off the sex-offender list.

Essentially I have no problem with the religious beliefs in Scientology, to be they're just as legitimate as any other organized religion... I mean, at least they can prove L.Ron Hubbard existed right?

My problem is with the "corporation" that hides behind those religious beliefs for various reasons, such as to make money and have control over people.

The Church of Scientology is a threat to anyone who believes in the various Freedoms and to those who have already been drawn into the "corporation" itself.

The Church has been known for it's abusiveness towards various members, especially those who wish to leave. I actually went into the Church one day (mostly for shits n' giggles) and when I left I was followed, only for about a block but it's still stalking.

Look up "Operation Snow White", "Operation Freakout", "Lisa McPherson" and "Elli Perkins" if your curious as to why so many of us dislike the Church of Scientology.

Nothing wrong with it, just as much proof for their beliefs as there is for any other religion. And they haven't caused a fraction of the pain and suffering other religions have caused.

^^^ Well to be fair, Scientology hasn't been around for a fraction of the time most major religions have.

It may have been one of the crappiest things Hubbard ever wrote, but it's turned into the biggest bullshit money-spinner.
