Samurai Champloo. Same guy who did Cowboy Bebop. Road trip in Medieval Japan. Its bittersweet.

Edited to add: Afro Samurai. One of the slickest looking animes with a real good script and Samuel Motherfucking Jackson.

Edited to further add: Have a look at some of the other recommendation lists. The same anime comes up again and again.

So any suggestions? I'd prefer if they were more light, upbeat, and funny. Nothing like grave of the fireflies please!

Grave of the Fireflies was tame compared to Hadashi no Gen.

Check out Now and Then, Here and There... I think it's like Grave of Fireflies. Though I haven't seen Grave yet.

Ghost in the Shell is also worth checking out. Especially the second OVA.

As for recent shows, I fell in love with the genius that is Code Geass. It's characters are designed by CLAMP which I thought was a bad move... AT FIRST! Then the show just got all awesome and didn't stop. I'm so amazed and happy with it. Season 2 comes out soon (next months) so check this so you'll be caught up.

It also won the 2007 Best Anime Award at the Huge Japanese Anime Convention I forget the name. It did not win that award for nothing!~

why not watch neon genesis evangelion... if you liked flcl, though this one is way more serious.

Gets kinda fucked up actually...

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

This is the second season entre to the Full Metal Panic series.

The first and third season are your generic mecha/school themed anime, but the second season is nothing but shits and giggles. It's all laughs, each episode is stand alone and requires no plot from the first season to understand.

I started with this then watched the 1st season.

Without the comedy, the series as a whole would be pretty generic, but that second season alone is one of the funniest things I've seen ever... even beyond anime.

Kick Ass Anime has the subs for it. Google.

I didn't mention that? yea, i already saw that a long time ago in english dub. It was funny as hell, probably the best of all the series.

By the way, has anyone watched xenosaga? I'm considering watching it, because I like the soundtrack. That's the same reason I started watching the .hack series.

code geass r2 has been fansubbed up to episode 19 or 20 so far. i'm really liking the second season, but does every episode have to end with a cliffhanger? every single one?!

i still eagerly await the next episode to be released though.

Check out Soul Eater, has some comedy and is pretty much packed with action.

Also, interesting choice about Paprika, I've also seen it, I'm wondering what you thought of it? :p

I just finished watching xenosaga season 1. It was pretty good, but I can't find the second season anywhere.

Right now, i'm going to go with code geasse R2, and then check out the other reccomendations after that.

What I thought of paprika? it was definately both unusual, and interesting that they incorporated the complex logic of dreams into an anime movie, but some parts of it seemed a little boring to me. I get better entertainment like this every night in my dreams.

Random question, have you ever played the xenosaga games? I heard those were fucked up beyond belief.

Nope. neither the .hack games.

How were they fucked up? just really bad gameplay or what?

It may sound weird but I'd actually reccomend Konjiki no Gash Bell (in english Zatch Bell) but NEVER watch the dubs, they ruin it! A group called Anime-destiny has subbed episodes 1-137. The series itself is 150 episodes long, but worth watching. As far as I know they're going to continue to do the rest of the series, and they release new episodes every 2 weeks-ish

No, like one of your party members knew Jesus. And the royal family is part robot or something like that. I didn't play them, but some of my friends did.

Bump.

Saw most of the reccomendations but need something more, while I wait for more episodes of soul eater to come out. Preferably under 80 episodes.

Have you seen Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure? I'm not sure if it's a spin off of the Tenchi series or not...people tell me there are similarities.

Vampire Hunter D and its sequel are both good movies.

The SoulTaker was pretty good, too.

Yea i've seen dual parallel universe, and it is a tenchi spin off. It's like a parrallel universe version of tenchi muyo GXP. It's one of those giant robot anime's like neon genesis and big-o.

I'll check out the other reccomendations. thank you very much everyone.

Currently there is no second season to the Xenosaga anime. It ends after Episode 1.

I loved the games to death. Unfortunately the story was stopped at Episode 3, and the gameplay changed alot since the first episode. KOS-MOS in Episode 2? What were they thinking?

Also, there has been no mention of Rozen Maiden. I find your lack of desu disturbing.

world destruction. i havent finished it yet only up to 8/13. very catchy story from previews and gets more catchy when you watch. its like a mix of one piece, planet of the apes and deathnote(in the sence they can kill at will when they know how, and its the entire world at once).
i never thought id see an anime so happy yet so i want to destroy the world. very amusing.

as poster above said zatch bell. another one i love but sadly didnt watch all of it. kind of like pokemon with better story and fights.

Gantz...

Provided you skip the second season and read the manga from that point on.
