I know you guys don't give out sources, and don't get me wrong that's not what I'm asking for.

With that out of the way, I used to purchase my KNO3 from stump remover at Home-Depot, but it turns out they don't sell it anymore because it's a dangerous substance.

I remember reading that some types of diuretic available at a pharmacy contain saltpeter, and that it's sometimes used in ice cream production, I was just wondering if anyone can tell me how I would identify a product made from KNO3, since I can't exactly walk into a store and ask for Potassium nitrate =/

Sucks that I'm trying to teach a friend about pyro and I can't find a steady source of this to make BP.

Edit: Ok, I apparently -can- walk into a pharmacy and ask for saltpeter, this can be closed/deleted ^^;

If you want nearly the most expensive source of potassium nitrate... then pharmacies are fine...

If you want it cheap why don't you check ceramic and agricultural supply stores?

Ebay is one of the best ways to get large amounts of pure KNO3 for pretty good values. If that's not an option for you, i think Wal-Marx still carries the KNO3 stump remover (i've seen it there) or you could resort to the NH4NO3 in cold packs.

Whoa... is this really just as effective? I mean, the idea occurred to be, but I assumed I was just full of it. Can you candy-rocket this sh*te? Cause if so, I've been sitting on a project way too long. I think I have to try it, regardless. Thank you.

I used to buy green light stump remover from lowes for 2 dollars and some change a pound but then I found I could buy it cheaper in 50Lb bags and alot more pure.

You mean everyones favorite auction site and mega-store. There are Ammonium Nitrate rocket mixes, but none (that I know of) will work with sugar.

Well, you could mess around with NH4NO3/sugar mixes, but you would have to rework that stoic to make it work well. What I meant was that you should use the NH4NO3 as your nitrate source. Just dissolve the NH4NO3 with a stoiciometric amount of KOH (or NaOH if you want NaNO3).

NH4NO3 + KOH ---> KNO3 + H2O + NH3

The ammonium ion acts as an acid in solution and will be neutralized by the KOH.

So all you would have to do is heat up the reaction solution enough to drive off all of the NH3 and push the reaction to the right. If your amounts were stoiciometric, pure KNO3 will crystallize out of your solution.

Chances are this person isn't even following the thread anymore.

Plus come on... KNO3 is everywhere...

Let it die.
