How do languages just change over time?? Is it one person who has alot of power that just says "this word is now an English word" or what?? How do new words come about?

One word that the English languages badly needs is a word thats a wild card for he or she. Heshe. The word "it" refers makes most people picture an inanimate object so that doesn't work. Its fuckin annoying talking about say a doctor or a pilot or something and always saying "he" when the fact of the matter is you don't know if its a he or a she. Could be either one. Could even be both. Hermaphrodites fly planes too.

I propose the word horse as a wildcard for either he or she. "Horse flies planes."

New words can evolve from other words, be borrowed, or are just made up. I don't think people are going to start using horse because that is simply retarded. The common pronoun with ambiguity of gender is they. It's traditionally not singular but it is so common I don't think we can stop it. After all, the singular pronoun you comes from the plural pronoun you. In the end, this is really no different. Try as they may, English teachers are fighting an uphill battle. I say, "bring it."

I suggest The Story of English. It's a great summary of the history of English that is a pretty quick read.
