Any Spanish speakers around? I need a little help with a translation. I think I'm getting it but I'm not really sure if I have it right. This is what I'm trying to translate into Spanish:

"I am going to open a travel agency to exotic places. My travel agency will offer trips to Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, South America and North America.

You can travel by airplane or bus. Maybe you prefer to take a vacation by boat. We offer many cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean Islands.

We have special offers for large groups. Our prices are low but the more people that are in your group the lower the price is.

My favorite trip is to Denver, Colorado. You can depart from Pittsburgh and fly to Denver. You will stay in a nice hotel for one week and enjoy many activities. You can go skiing or go out to the bars.

If you want more details please come to our office or call on the telephone. "

I got pretty much all of it done, but it would really help if a native speaker (or someone who really knows Spanish) could lend a hand. I've let a few classmates read over my translation and they said they didn't understand some of it.

All advertisements are always done in usted form. KNOW IT! I left out some accents (read: almost all), so be aware.

Thank you for your help! (and letting me know its always in Ud. form for advertisements)

That is quite close to what I had originally, some of my verbs were wrong tho.

I can do the accents - thats one part that I know pretty well :)

Thanks again!

Voy a abrir una agencia de viajes a lugares exóticos. Mi agencia de viajes ofrece(present, not future tense; your agency is offering viajes NOW) viajes a Europa, Asia, Australia, Sudamérica y Norteamérica.
Usted puede viajar por avión o por autobús. Si usted prefiere tomar una (though you have several correct-sounding options, I'd use "una vacaccion" here. Regardless, make sure your un(a) agrees with your noun) vacacion por barco, ofrecemos muchos <<cruises>> a Alaska y las islas del Caribe.
Tenemos ofertas especiales para grupas grandes. Nuestros precios son bajos, pero lo más personas en su grupo, lo menos el precio.
Mi viaje favorito es a Denver, Colorado. Usted puede salir de Pittsburg y volver a Denver. Usted se quedé en un hotel agradable por una semana y divertirese con(divertirse literally means to have oneself a good time; so read in English, "you will have yourself a good time a lot of activities" doesn't make much sense; maybe a larger revision is necessary) muchas actividades. Puede esquiar o ir a las bars (how sure are you that this is the right word?) .
Haga un viaje en casa para Pascua. Mi agencia de viajes tiene precios pequeños para vacaciones de los días festivos. Preparese(this literally means prepare yourself, which is what you're trying to say ;)) ahora para(por and para rules are EXTREMELY complicated, but this sounds like a place for para) el Día de la Independencia y La Navidad (Navidad by itself means "birth" La Navidad means "the birth", which is the right way to refer to Jesus). El tiempo pasa muy rápido y su billeto de ida y vuelta esté perdido("perdiendo" means losing; i.e. "el equipo esta perdiendo su jugadores". Perdido on the other hand means lost, i.e. "mis pantalones estan perdidos) si usted no haga(the "hacer" in this sentence requires the subjunctive tense, which is something you probably haven't learned yet [what?! you thought it was all nouns, adjectives, and simple conjugations from here on out?! ;)]and is so complex that I won't even touch it. Just accept it for now.) planes rápidamente.
Si usted quiere más detalles, por favor, llega a nuestra oficina o llamanos por el teléfono. La agencia de viajes es en el centro de Greenville, PA cerca de Sheetz. Está abierto durante las horas de empresa. El número de teléfono de nuestra oficina(always helps to be specific) es 724-555-1234

Changes I made are in bold. I took out the los in the first paragraph because that just doesn't sound right (read it in English; you'll know what I mean).

Also took off las in "Tenemos las ofertas especiales" for the same reason as above.

Took off los in "Mi agencia de viajes tiene los precios pequenos" for the same reason. Careful with the articles, that seems to be a persistent problem.

Mostly just basic stuff, but overall it sounds good.

nshanin got it pretty right, though there still are a few mistakes.

Here's my suggestion, without changing your original text that much; the bold words are most (I may have missed something) of that differs from nshanin's suggestion:

----

Haga un viaje para casa durante las Pascuas [Rust: I'd use "durante la Semana Santa" but that may be more of a Puerto Rican phrase].

Note:

Don't trust the accents that much; even though I'm a native speaker, I hate them. I hardly use them.

Also, I'm from Puerto Rico; some things may be said differently depending what dialect you're being taught. Just like an American speaking with a Brit; things might be somewhat different.

I got most of the rest of that (excepting "mientras mas personas haya en su grupo, mas bajo es el precio"); but could you explain why hacer wouldn't be in subjunctive form in this case?

Rust

Well I'm terrible regarding grammatical rules so if you're looking for a good explanation, I'm not the guy.

"In Spanish, the subjunctive (subjuntivo) is used in conjunction with expressions of emotion, opinion, or viewpoint. It is also used to describe situations that are considered unlikely or are in doubt, as well as for expressing disagreement, volition, or denial."

We aren't really expressing any of those in this phrase, just saying what's going to happen if you don't make plans.

That's the best I can do. :(

As for " "mientras mas personas haya en su grupo, mas bajo es el precio""

That essentially means "the more people there are in your group, the lower the price".

"mas personas" = "more people"

"hayan*" = "there are"

"en su grupo" = "in your group"

"mas bajo es el precio" = "the lower the price"

"Mientras" means "while" but it essentially corresponds to the "the" in "the more people" and "the lower" in this context.

*made a mistake, left the n originally, sorry.

Hmmm.... this looks like a job for Yahoo! Answers. I'll get back with the results in a day or two.

Aha! Perhaps "su boleto este (subjunctive) perdido"? And then present tense for hacer? I'm asking anyway.

Rust
2008-03-27, 04:02
"su boleto este perdido" doesn't make sense here. It could make sense in another sentence, but not really here.

However the whole sentence does sound kinda funny. It's like saying your "your ticked is lost if you don't make plans quickly".

nshanin
2008-03-27, 04:10
Then estare', in the future tense would probably make more sense. "your ticket will be lost if you don't make plans quickly". I was taught that uncertainty (in a very specific sense) is a time to use the subjunctive, but I suppose we'll see. I'll ask my Spanish prof. tomorrow.

On a related note, could you tell me anything about the universities in Puerto Rico? I'm seriously considering studying there through Nat'l Student Exchange for a semester or 2.

What do you want to know?

If you're going to study something Math, Science or Engineering related go with UPRM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPRM) or Polytechnic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PUPR). UPRM is cheaper (it's a "State" university), the Polytechnic costs more (it's private), but both have a good reputation in the Science fields, specially Engineering.

If you're going to study something like Humanities or Law, then UPRRP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Puerto_Rico%2C_Rio_Piedras_Campus) is probably the best choice, if not then UPRM.

Those are the Universities they'll allow me to go. Cost isn't a factor because my scholarship will pay for it.

I'll likely be double majoring--one in a soft science and one in a real one; but to be completely honest, my local Uni has one of the best programs in the nation for both, so I'd really only like to go to PR for the culture/experience. Is there much difference from that perspective between any of the universities I listed?

Rust
2008-03-31, 18:51
Well in terms of culture, I'd suggest Rio Piedras (UPRRP) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Puerto_Rico%2C_Rio_Piedras_Campus). I've never been to that campus myself, but from what I've heard it's your best bet in terms of "culture".

It's active, it's in the San Juan area, so you'd be close to most of the tourist atractions (Old San Juan, 'El Morro') museums, and all that stuff. Plus you can pretty much take a road trip to any place in PR if you want. So if you want to go to some of the beaches in the East, it's still only not that long (around 2 hours driving).
