Over the past few months I have been getting more and more into hockey. I watch every game I can and actually got tossed out of a bar a week ago for getting in a fight with a Redwings fan over a "talk" about teams. Anyway, I ordered a jersey of my favorite team (Blue Jackets) with custome name and # (my last name and then the number is the year I was born). No one on the team has that number or name and my friends are giving me shit for it. They are saying that I am a "wannabe" and that I am degrading the jersey/team. I want to know what other NHL fans think about this. My friends know dick about hockey, and I know some but am still learning. I have most of them players' and teams' stats down pat. So why can't I get a jersey and show my fan-hood with my name on it?

I personally wouldn't ever get a jersey with my name. But I really don't care what people do with their jerseys.

Blue Jackets kick ass. I liked them a lot a few years back because they sucked so bad. They've gotten a lot better.

Been watching/playing hockey for over 15 years now...its by far my favourite sport.

When I was really little...i loved doug gilmour (still do). I got a leafs jersey that had gilmours number but my last name...I think that is pretty lame...but i was like 4.

But I have nothing against people who put their own names and numbers on a jersey. I think it is paying homage to the team.
One of the reasons that people put their own names on jerseys is because it feels amazing to wear a jersey of a team you love. Having your name and number on it is like saying "I wish I could play for this great team." I dont think it disrespects the team at all.

I have 4 NHL jerseys - 50% have my name on the back.

Haha, a typical hockey thread; three Canadian replies.. now a fourth.

As for the question, I don't see the problem with it. I am thinking seriously about getting a Vancouver jersey with my name and number on the back. To be perfectly honest, the reason is, is that I don't even like anyone on the Canucks right now enough to wear their jersey. They're still my favorite team but I haven't had a favorite player on there since Bure, and he never played with Van with the new jerseys. I think that would be more "sacreligious" than putting your own name/number.

The only problem that I can see with that is that my last name is Hunter and there is a Hunter on the Islanders and people will probably be like "what the fuck?".

But whatever.

It's my understanding that anyone who admires Paul Kemp wouldn't really give a fuck.

I don't think theres a problem with that at all, infact I think it's better to get your own name rather than butt-sucking some player. Good on you, tell your friends to go fuck themselves.

I personally don't mind getting your name on a jersey at all, but the only time I would do it is if the team currently has no big players, or if the guy has the same last name as me... a friend of mine with the last name "Tauscher" wore a Mark Tauscher Packers jersey that people really liked.
