View Full Version : Ever tried to create a manga?
It's fucking hard.
It's like compressing a novel down to a bunch of dialogue and then picking out the best/most descriptive lines. Also, does anyone know how the boxes are divided? Is it just randomly or are there specifications?

My friend made one before, a short strip. It looked like shit though because he can't draw straight lines.
My friend wants me to hep draw up her manga for her. I've read the storyline, it's pretty generic but there's interest in it from the comic shop nearby (I just want my name on that shit).
I don't know how I'm supposed to draw this up. She's written 2 notebooks worth of crap to include after narrowing down lines and stuff but it feels like there are plotholes because the scenes aren't moving like in anime.

I drew up some shit years ago. Fairly short and only two stories (not to mention 2-d perspective :o). I just made shit up as I went along. :D
Fuck boxes, though. Draw it like you want it.

i used to play around with all sorts of story idears, but i could never get any of my more artistic friends to help me out.
damn lazy stoners.
as far as style and how the boxes are divided...try looking around at different manga. i like webcomics myself. they seem to limit you a lot less as far as style and format.
megatokyo's always been my favorite as far as style and artwork.

I have no idea where it is now. I drew it years ago and I doubt I even have it.
It was Gundam-esque but without people.

I made a series of short comedic violent comics about this guy who kills various adversaries over and over again in my freshman year of high school.

I should make a manga.
Be sure to include giant robots, swords, and ludicrous amounts of fanservice.

I'm very confident in my abilities to come up with weird, moderately interesting anime-esque plots. It's actually my main creative pass-time (writing speculative-fiction novels/short stories). And I tend to be kind of obsessive and methodical about it, and I really get off on some of the deeper nuances of storytelling and character and literary type shit... So, I've always really wanted to do a graphic novel or manga. I really enjoy the medium, and I think I'm good enough at visualizing scenes in my head, that I could probably make a pretty compelling one.
The problem is, I'm not confident in my visual-art skills. I'm actually planning to take some line-art classes for this very purpose. I'm alright with words, but I consider my stories more visual in nature. Live action/film is an unfeasible medium, budget wise, for a person who does this shit purely for personal enjoyment/escapism. Anime, likewise, is too high budget. Also, it's just too many people dipping their fingers into the pot. I don't want everyone on the project given some level of creative liberty... influencing the story in unintended ways via their involvement in it's creation. I really can't deal with that. Plus, there's just something about graphic novels. It can be so fucking artistic if done right. A picture really is a thousand words. Monochromatic illustrated panels perhaps contain a few less words than a color photograph, but the idea still applies. Who needs whole fucking paragraphs dedicated to a description, when you can just fucking show it. Not necessarily that it has more merit than real fictional literature... but it definitely has some clear advantages to normal fiction, if it's something you can do effectively/artistically.
So yeah, I'm all for it, and then some. Granted I gain the skills to adequately convey my ideas.

that, my friend, is just one of many forms of fan service. :)

i'm in the same boat.
i'm always coming up with ideas for storylines and whatnot, but my art skillz suck ass. even my stick figures hate themselves and want to die.
maybe totse anime should get together and make something one of these days...
