View Full Version : Golden calf...just a foot stool?

In one of my religion classes my professor was discussing how Aaron built the golden calf at Sinai as a foot stool for YHWH, since many gods of the time were depicted with foot stools(one was even said to be outside Solomon's temple). The calf was not meant to be a god itself but a platform from which YHWH could address the people of Israel.

Is this just one man's opinion or is there other evidence supporting this that anyone else has found?
Thanks.

Hi Motziecantus,

I won't call what I am saying evidence...

I am not sure how historically accurate the movie called "The 10 Commandments" with Chalton Hesten was on this...

As I remember from the movie, the Golden Calf represented a specific ancient pagan God from the time period of Moses...
The movie mentioned the name of the pagan God, but I can't remember the name...

But I do consider the explanation given in "The 10 Commandments" as being more reasonable than what your professor told you...
Just my opinion, of course...

I believe the god in "the 10 commandments" was supposed to be "ba'al". The same god who Ahab and Jezebel worshiped when Elijah intervened.

Moses was a crack pot.

I read somewhere that instead of them being Idols, they were just ways to put all the gold in to one big mass in a nice design. Not so much Idols, but they were important.

I guess people started to worship them, Fuck I wouldn't have followed moses. He was kinda... well he was no messenger. And he actually wasn't that good of a leader.

Lawl at moses and his 15 commandments.

Lawl at people believing that god wrote that shit on slabs of rock.

Lawl at no one thinking that Moses just chiseled shit down in a drug frenzy.

Epic lawl at him dropping one.

Lawl at the plagerism Moses did.

Ba'al was worshiped by the Carthaginians and other North African Nations

When the bible was being written and re-written, the names of other gods were put in as demons.

And yes, it probably was something completely harmless, then moses came down from the mountain and his, what was it, DXM high and killed a bunch of them.

Someone grab the link to that thread in this forum about the evidence showing that Moses was just high. I remember it from a few weeks ago, but I can't be arsed.

The Ba'al that is worshiped/spoken of most often in the bible is referred to as the Ba'al of Tyre. The same Ba'al that was mentioned later on during the reign of Ahab and Jezebel and the challenge by Elijah. But Ba'al is also just a term for a god, anywhere Mediterranean.
