This is a subject that is very touchy for some people, anyhow...
I first started hearing about the Australian drought back in 2002, very serving correctly it has been labelled as the worst in Australias history going back 200 years??
Anyhow what I don't get is how these farmers can go on television current affiars programs week after week (If not, it sure seems this frequent) with bleeding heart stories. The Australian Government is currently giving these people 'farmers assistance' or what we of the non-farming community call 'money'.
It is in place with justification that it's investing in our future, that we need to look after these people.
Moving on to what I figure, which is, that they need to put more strategy into what they do. Farmers crying on tv on their plot of dust saying nothing will grow need to start using their brain - No sir, nothing will grow there, take your money and use it to look after yourself until the drought breaks instead of wasting it on risky ventures.
Furthermore to this, farmers are producing things like say fruit, vegetables and milk. They are all sort 'as is' and are perishable. If it's so hard to produce what they have which is why everything local is so damn expensive why don't they UHT the milk so it's shelf stable and can the fruit/veg?
To me it's nothing but utter stupidity these people saying how hard it is to produce the stuff when at the end of the end it's something that may not even be sold and end up as waste as it has perished.
I believe they should process more of their product in ways that will prolong the shelf life...but of course then there may not be such a high demand for these items as they aren't regularly rotting away and farmers won't be making their money on the surplus they were providing during 'better' times.
I think farmers got away with having an endless demand for things they could supply for so long it became their norm and they can't (won't) change to meet the new way of things.
