i'm having a brain fart but I'm assuming that if I got that stuff thats aluminum and rust and when ignited turns to molten metal(forget the scientific term...help me out) thios would burn right through the outer casing and give me the deisred effect, attaching the fuse to some sort of remote controlled device for ignition.

would this work?

Solid oxygen. Lol. Unless you got some really high end scientific equipment, that's not going to happen. Also, cold won't blow the tank, all it'll do is fuel the propane combustion, but as I said above, it's impractical, the dude was joking. Fueling the propane isn't necceary, but it will make a bigger "boom." I'll explain more below.

Also, what kind of propane tank are we talking? Blowtorch size, 5 gallon, or like the fuel-a-house 500 gallon? I'm pretty sure the first two could be a thermite job, whereas the last would not be advisable under any circumstances.

As for thermite, almost all the directions you find online will work. It's a little hard to light though. What I'd recommend is make some ANAL, and have it partially mixed with a part of the thermite. Then when you light the ANAL, it'll burn right into the thermite. Then all the heat created by the thermite, when the tank pops, should ignite the propane released into the air producing a wicked cool fireball.

If you're looking for something with a little more bang, powder some AN and put a big pile of it on top of the tank, so when it pops, the propane throws powdered AN up in the air with it, which when the gas ignites will cause decomp and oxygen release. As for how much, probably 2 kg for 5 gal or .5 kg for blowtorch size.

and its not a "bomb," it's a unique pyrotechnic experience.

Thermite MAY cut though the tank and light the gas. However did you think of AFTER? If it makes a huge fireball like you want, it's going to throw hot slag and shrapnel everywhere. thats the only good use of trying to "blow up" a 5 gallon propane tank.

I've seen it done with a railroad flare (common trucker's road warning flare). If you just want to see what happens, troll (whooops) through Youtube and you'll find several videos. Propane tanks are very heavy duty. Even the backyard grill tanks are almost .25" thick. If you're talking a propane torch tank, a flare ought to work fine.

Eh? 12 pound (e.g. "backyard") propane tanks are made of about 14 ga. steel. I make air tanks out of them all the time, and I've drilled through one or two. They aren't even thick enough to hold a good thread if you try to tap one. Portable tanks for torches and camping grills are even thinner.

The big ones that are used at fill stations or to power houses' heating systems or what have you are substantially thicker, but trying to set off one of those is tantamount to suicide...

As for making a propane tank explode, I use to think it would be possible to ductape a Co2 bomb to the side of a full propane tank. Device explodes, makes in a hole in the outer casing of the tank, releases flammable gas, sparks and embers from the explosion and metal hitting the tank still remain, which ignites the gas making a big fireball.

Yeah I know that its not explosive, but when the thermite burns into the tank or a spark makes contact, it will still burn, and the contents are under pressure making an explosion effect. I'm talking one of those large stationary tanks, not a BBQ tank. HE would be overkill. And what kind of question is, where would you acquire the HE? Um, make it? I can take $50, go to any major chain store, and have everything I need to make 10+ nice sized sticks of dynamite.
