View Full Version : Tests to prove a material is gold.

Hey guys. I did a quick Google search for this and all I found was really expensive testing machines for seeing some material is actually. Some guy wants to sell me some gold for money and is doing it for faaaaaaaar less than what the price of gold is right now (which is around 900 dollars an oz.). I don't think he understands this being as he is a druggie and he just wants to get coke with the money.
Is there any cheap way to test for gold with household products or do I need to buy a gold tester kit like this one.

Or are these not to be trusted?
Thanks.

I don't recall anything that has a reaction with gold except Aqua Regia as it is a noble metal.

Do it like that one guy did for that king or whatever it was waaaaaaaaaaaaay back when...
DENSITY = MASS / VOLUME
Use a scale to find the mass, then use water displacement to find the volume.
Then compare the density to the densities of gold and various common gold alloys... But obviously you would need a accurate scale... and a accurate graduated cylinder or preferably something more accurate than that...

Gold is often alloyed with copper.
A couple of drops of HNO3 will clearly show you if there's copper present (nox released), while not affecting your gold in any way.
Anoth possibility is that it's a block of gilded lead, or yellow pyrite (iron sulfide). pyrite will also dissolve in nitric acid.
You'd have to saw through a block to detect the lead underneath.

agreed also what form does this gold take ?
like is it bullion or bar stock or is it jewlery ect..
but the other posters are right i have also found the only to good reliable ways is to compare the density with that of real gold as well as to do the HNO3 test ... for the HNO3 you want to be sure and use a very very fine abbrasive material on the surface of the gold to remove any tarnish or other gunk ... to get a accurate test

Wh not take it to a jeweler before you buy it?

Archimedes?
He tested volume (displacement) versus weight to determine density and compared it to a known good sample of gold. Simple stuff, really.
Chemical tests (acids, etc.) will probably be misleading without cutting into the sample since many "fake" gold pieces are actually gold fill nowadays. That is, a brass or sometimes even silver core with fraction-of-millimeter thick gold plating on top.
Err, how about a really smart crackhead who electroplated gold onto shit metal.

Yeah, we had a little snippet about electroplating copper onto crap back when copper theft was starting to pick up, to stick it to scrap dealers who bought copper knowing well it had been stolen.
Gold however, can't be simply electroplated, it requires a mixture of some exotic gold-containing chemicals (and some toxic ones, like cyanide salt) for it to work.

Why not take it to a jew
Yeah, any Jew worth his Yarmulke knows gold from fake gold, but unfortunately he's likely lie about it's gold content so he can take it back to his nest. You could always do the ol tried and tested pirate/three stooges method of testing, and bite it.

Biting it only works for silver. You're liable to break your teeth on a gold piece.

Turns out it was gold. I took it to a coin shop and had a guy look at it.
Bought about 8oz. for 500 dollars.
Stupid crackheads hahahahahah.

What are you going to do with it?
What are you going to do with it?
If I was hime I would either, sell it now to make definate profit, or wait a couple of years till gold goes up in price.

when I read the thread title, this is what immediately came to mind.
500 per ounce or 500 for the whole sale? if you paid 500 total that's fuckin awesome you made some hefty bank off that dude.

isnt cyanide the only thing to react with gold?
might be a way to test(or get yourself killed, whatever)

Didn't someone say that on the other page?? And furthermore, it's too late, he bought the gold. 8Oz for $500.

If it's 8 oz of almost or pure gold, 22k or up, trade it with the coin dealer for more recognizable gold like American Gold Eagles, South African Krugerrands, or Canadian Maple Leafs. Hold onto those fuckers til gold gets really valuable and we live in the age of scarcity.... good fucking find buddy... I'm mad jealous

Well, I know it can conduct electricity and won't flatten when you hit it with a hammer.

an extremely easy and cost free way is to drop it in water. Fill up a bottle or something and drop a coin in it, goes does fairly slow. Then drop something you know for a fact is solid gold, it sinks like a ton of bricks. Compare whatever you are testing and something that is gold and wahla!

There are a variety of steps involving qualitative analysis to determine whether or not something is gold. This involves breaking down the material, sorting out the various attached metals into other substances (like Copper Chloride).
It would require time, effort, and a variety of acids and bases. Gold cannot be destroyed by any acid, for what I know at the moment.
