Looking at the sky, and saying "If anyone's out there.. thank you for making this world"
I think letting go is about letting that which does not matter slide.

Being of the world, but not in it.
Looking at the sky, and saying "If anyone's out there.. thank you for making this world"
"Were there no God, we would be in this glorious world with grateful hearts, and no one to thank." Christina Rossetti.
Cheers:)

Letting go in the Buddhist sense?
Looking at the sky, and saying "If anyone's out there.. thank you for making this world"
Why do you need to look towards the sky and say thank you? what exactly are you looking at or looking for?
Why don't you thank god (i presume that is what you were referring to) ...via your actions?...like before you eat, be greatfull that you have a chance to eat. when you wake up, if you see that the house is unclean, then clean it, to show thanks, that you have a house to live in, and not intentionally leave it for your parents etc.
Interact with your mother/father. Be kind to them and care for them, to show that you are greatfull that you have another day with them.
Take care of yourself and other people. If you are walking down the street, and see a homeless man, spare him some change. To show a thanks, that you acknowledge people suffering, and have the opportunity to do a good deed.
Good works will change your heart and open your mind. to the point where you will no longer need to wander around in confusion.
But importantly, increase your knowledge. If you are interested in Religion, then know God by his concepts and definitions.

I think looking at the sky is arbitrary.
Looking at a mountain or a tree or a spider works just as well for me.
I would take exception with the "out there " part, however. At the risk of sounding like a Christian, one of the most quotable quotes from the Nazz was "the kingdom of God is within you." Or as the old Vedic sage wrote,"We are not in the world--the world is in us."
I Am totally on the same page as OP with the gratitude thing. Gratitude is one of the most highly spiritual states there is.

I think letting go means.........
.Leaving whatever u have.....to join a Resistance group such as EZLN to fight off the government & train to shoot weapons For the revolution that awaits all of us.

Letting go of the fear of Hell helps you let go of the false hope of Heaven.
So what if we're here by chance, that life has a degree of entropy, and there isn't anyone to "thank"
We have probability to thank in this self-contained, complex system governed by flawless and amazing laws of science (some of which we haven't and may never understand).

Forget the God part, and you're a real atheist. If you're interested in leading a good life without the "fearing" God, in whatever sense you can imagine, it's just as easy to look at the world objectively and appreciate the truly alien and bizarre world we live in
You don't need some magical higher purpose in life to lead you on to a straw bridge. I'm perfectly content with having the opportunity to percieve an existence. When I die, I'll know it will be like how it was before I was born, and that wasn't so bad.

Forgetting the god part, obviously would make one an atheist. But "real atheist"..what exactly is that?. A term defined by how a non- religious individual should live his life, by the standards that you agree with?..wouldn't that be you who is playing god, by telling me what a "real atheist" is?.

How will you know? What can you present that you'll "know" how it will be after your death?

You'd think people would outgrow their imaginary friends. I can't ever even remember having one, I don't get what the fuss is about.
It's allways good to stop and take a minute and be thankfull for what you have and the beauty in this planet.

OP, clearly made a reference. Check his first sentence. Forget about that part. Even the god you're referring to (I assume you are).
I'm not telling you how to live your life at all, a real atheist is someone that does not think anyone is out there, just like you defined.
And that is my way of coping with what I cannot cope with religion anymore. That would be like me asking you to present where you are between space and time right now.
I don't know what it was like before birth, nor do I know what it will be like after death. It's my opinion that it's the same. I know that because you cannot prove otherwise so let's not run in circles.
edit: besides, you're the one here telling me to clean my room and be grateful before I eat. Who cares? It's my life, right? I made no such implications that I am requiring you to do similar acts to qualify as a "real atheist"
All I said was what you said.
Looking at the sky, and saying "If anyone's out there.. thank you for making this world"
Nice for those who have the luxury of doing it, I'm sure.
Isn't the follow up to that phrase supposed to be "... and letting God"?
