i was wondering if i could actually make a rocket that would make it to space. and orbit the earth so i have my own personal satelite with all the other top nations out there.

how much would this cost. what fuels should i use. how would i know it reached space?

i really like the idea that i mite have my own piece of space trash floating around out there.

thanks but there isnt really a place to go where i can find out how to get shit into space bob.
let alone build my own spacecraft. so i figured the good people of BB would help me out a little more than the average search engine.

so does ne1 else have any ideas?

Sure you can put a micro satellite into ''space''/Low earth orbit, but it wouldn't stay there very long... First you'd need a lot of money. Second you would need to look into JATO or jet assisted take off for your rocket and third as I imagine you want to build and design you own rocket, You'd need to look into different propellants.

I don't see why. I'm not aware of any "you will be arrested if you cross this line" sort of laws regarding low earth orbit, and as long as your rocket doesn't damage somebody's property (or person!) on the way up or down I fail to see how anyone could take any more exception to it than any big old model rocket.

Plus, I think without military assistance or something it would be pretty tough for any bystander on the ground to confidently be able to prove that what went up never actually came down because it flew into orbit.

how could i condense hydrogen into liquid form?

is it feasible? should i use liquid propellants for the first stage and solid for other stages?

and like fate said how will i know it went to space?

how could i rig a gps into this that will send me back signal from space?

wont the gps stop working once it gets high enough up?


on construction of the body i was thinking of having a steel tube about 1/4in thick with a 24 in diameter probably like 20 ft tall.

then attach extra boosters around the base that once they burn up the fuel crack off and fall back to earth.

would i have to coat it with anything to keep it from melting or is that only re-entry?

You learn how to do most all of that by researching. :D

Chances are that if you shoot a rocket off designed to reach space... without telling the proper authorities and getting clearance... ie making sure no planes will be flying in the area just like what has to be done with some rocketry club events.... it will be shot down...

Thats assuming you get to that point... somehow without actually researching.

Anyway, your space agency would be limited by the fuels available to you. LOX/Liquid Hydrogen is the most efficient liquid fuel, but it takes a massive amount of energy and equipment to cool it to 3 or 4 degrees Kelvin, to get it in its liquid state. Fuels like hydrazine are way too volatile and hard to produce in the right quantities. Maybe a real good chemist could make a few ounces, but they won't be making tonnes and tonnes of the stuff. Probably the easiest rocket fuel to use is a hybrid, like the one in Virgin Galactic's ship. Next to that, probably a monopropellant peroxide rocket.

Just about anyone could build a rocket to reach the boundary of space, 100 kilometers. But that doesn't matter if you don't have the speed to maintain an orbit, your payload would just fall back down. To reach between 50-250km altitude, you would only need a relatively small rocket, like a sounding rocket. (1-2m wide, 10-15m tall)

To get an orbital satellite, you would need a much more powerful rocket. The Soviet R-7 that launched sputnik had four boosters, each with a diameter of 2.7 meters. The main engine was 3 meters wide. The whole craft weighed 267 tonnes, most of which was liquid oxygen and kerosene. Not the kind of thing you can keep hidden in your garden shed.

I think the brit's used it to get into space.

You could go for the relatively simple yet dangerous option of using a solid propellant.
I believe these guys used the same Ammonium perchlorate based propellant that NASA uses for the SRB's (solid rocket boosters)

it was used in the black arrow
but those things were as big as a house and broke down half the time
plus i think obtaining that much peroxide in this day and age would raise some eyebrows
of course you could use the mixture of nitric acid and kerosene that the Russians used in their scuds

'Cause the concussion would be enough to cause any rocket with a good p/w ratio (and therefore delicate) to CATO. When cracks open up in your cored rockets, for example, they produce gas faster than it can be expelled, with foreseeable results.

The army actually has some that do this, but its really just enough to get the exhaust far enough away to keep from toasting the operator / friendly forces. (The rocket will pop out of the tube, fall a bit, and then rocket off to where ever its going. EG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH4PkOhrSn0

yes i can see how that could be a problem with a liquid fuel rocket
but fate was talking about a solid fuel rocket which are generally more robust
