Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for scholarships that don't require an essay to apply. I already know I suck at writing essays. I'm looking through FastWeb, but most of the ones it's bringing up for me I'm not even applicable for (I'm not in college yet, I don't play sports, I'm not a minority race...). I've found a few that are more, artistic, I guess (write a greeting card, design a t-shirt, photography contest), but there aren't that many.
Anyway, like I said, just wondering if anyone knows of any right off.

k, let me tell you in case you don't already know, scholarships are not that prevalent. i had always thought there were plenty of small scholarships out there for me, that collectively would pay for a good chunk if not all of my college, but no. that is not the case.

i tell you this because you can't be picky in choosing which scholarships to apply for. try to apply for everything you are eligible for and what you have time to do. everything i've ever seen involves writing some sort of essay or personal statement. i did get one that my high school counselor did for me that i guess was just based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores. the shitty scholarship my college gave me also didn't require an essay.

you should talk to your counselor.

scholarhips that exist on a national level should be a distant priority. look at local and state scholarships first. your high school counselor should have an idea of what those are. i hope you aren't a senior now though because it's really late to start looking for scholarships. you need to start in the fall of your senior year, as some deadlines are as early as october.

fastweb, assuming you registered and filled out your profile shit fully, will only match you up with scholarships you do qualify for. that's why they ask you a shitload of questions. local, state, and national scholarships show up there, but some local ones get overlooked. and don't forget, very few scholarships are four year ones. so even if it's too late to get something for your freshman year, it's never too early to start planning for sophomore year funding.

tl/dr: no one here can tell you what scholarship to apply for. you need to go after local ones. to know which ones exist, you need to ask your high school counselor.

^What he said, especially in the first 2 paragraphs. Don't rely on those kinds of scholarships. I literally applied to at least 50 of them, and guess how many I got. Not one. Luckily, I got a really good scholarship from the school that I'm going to, or else I'd owe about $40,000 in loans by now, and I'm only a sophomore.

^ What she said. There are really only two types of scholarships you should be looking at--state (and more localized), and institutional. Your best bet really is institutional aid since many students tend to overlook it in favor of private aid, which only makes up something like 20% of the aid market. If you're poor (I doubt it, but ya never know), go apply for government aid and/or work study. If you have the time for private scholarships, then go and apply; but go for the big ones (either in quantity or in payout), regardless of whether or not they have an essay segment. Oh, and FastWeb is utter shit. Have you seen how many people there are registered there? Chances are some student will be looking at the same scholarship you are through FastWeb. Your councelor and other education officials (like college fin aid officers) will be your best bet for finding the local scholarships you need. At my high school they have a councelor dedicated full-time to scholarship support; most of which is state-based.

Thanks for the info. The main reason why I asked was just because I had to apply to a certain number of scholarships for a class, but that's over now. Now that it's summer, I'll actually have time to look at the better scholarships that might actually mean something.
Again, thanks for the ideas and help.

I wasn't trying to get out of it. It's just that time of year is right before AP exams and finals, and I was writing enough essays and whatnot as it was. I was just looking for different ones, since I know they're out there (but now I know, from what people in this thread have said, those are usually crap).

my point was your original post was misleading. it seemed like you were trying to find scholarships for yourself because you wanted to, and you wanted non essay ones because you're not too confident in your writing abilities. instead, you just wanted to gather up some easy scholarship applications to get credit for an assignment. why didn't you just say that in the first place?

My apologies. Granted, that is how it started out, and the assignment was more of a "push" for me to get done what I was going to do anyway, but I learned from this thread that those scholarships are usually crap, so I was just saying that in this case there's no huge worries because I'm not in a hurry or anything.
Basically, I had actually thought those scholarships would work, but I'm just now finding they usually don't.
