I am really wanting to go into the military at this point, I got my GED and im almost done taking a couple collage classes. I always wanted to go into the marines because I think it would be the coolest fuckin branch to join, and I really want the challenge of it. But my parents really don't want me too, they think i would get killed because of this stupid ass war we got going on, and they would worry non stop sick about me..

So my question is, how risky is it to join the Marines today, as in what are really the odds of getting killed?

I just wanna make sure my parents aren't feeding me bullshit to keep me where they want me.

Thankz

Currently, there is no branch of the millitary that isn't risky. I would say in terms of the least risk that is involved, there are a few branches that come to mind. If you go to college, go ROTC. Upon graduation you immediately have a higher status than just an ensign. Also, there is less probabilty you get sent to Iraq. The Airforce is also a good branch of the millitary, as long as you aren't the one flying the choppers (which is a possibility). The last one that comes to mind is the National Guard. If you do this, there is still a chance that you get sent to Iraq though. Also, this won't be your primary job. It will kind of be a side profession that take up a month or so of your year (assuming you don't get sent to Iraq and there aren't any hurricanes that reak havoc on Florida).

In terms of the marines... 5 of my friends joined the marines right out of highschool. They all are in Iraq currently. It is one of the riskiest things you can do. If you are up for it though, that by all means join. The marines are one of the most well respected groups in our country. Good luck with your decision.

Why would you want to join the military if you don't believe in the war that it's currently fighting? If you join any branch, ANY branch you will be going to Iraq. Every branch is over there. If you join the Marines, you will definitely be in harms way, and rotated over there more often. If you are afraid to die, or you don't think dying for your country is worth it, then do not join. Besides dying you're forgetting about the people that return home seriously injured, missing legs, arms, eyes, and mental problems.

You need to seriously think about why you want to join, and if you will truly benefit from it. 'Coolest fuckin branch', makes me think you don't have a fucking clue about what it is to be a Marine, and if you want a challenge, train for a triathlon, it doesn't come with an 8 year commitment.

Yeah I probibly should have mentioned more about my situation. Well I said I got my GED, im in collage taking 2 classes that I am almost done with. And im working a full time job 40 hours a week. I am mainly joining the military to get away from my parents.. Not because I am really patriotic or anything like that. They are too controlling, they dont let me do shit, basically all I do is go to work and school and sit in my room, and I really don't want to have to live here and deal with them anymore on this rather boring path im living right now. I cant really move out, because my dads main argument is that I cannot support myself, and they are just dicks and will not allow me to pool resources with a friend or something..

I want out, and military is an easy way out of my house. Also when I said that about the marines, your right and you have very good points, I just always thought they were badass as a kid and have always wanted to join that branch. Ill do a lot more research to learn what its really about..

thanks again.

The chances of being killed in the US military are very low, despite the incessant jingoism.
