I have terror staves, and a valknot (death knot) tattoo. But a very generic tattoo that odinists get is that little snowflake charm. It's supposed to mean protection in battle.
But why would you want that? If your protected in battle, you'll never die in battle (wich should be the main goal for people who follow this). On top of that, it's giving some power to something that cant help you. And I know there was a smaller branch of Odinist in Europe who worshipped Frigga or something instead of Odin, and they didn't believe in being aggressive and all of this other stuff. And I'm guessing thats where this nonsense came from.
As far as terror staves, there is such thing as an aura. There might actually be something to it. If not, it's part of the culture. Asking god to put fear in your enemies isn't wrong. Asking him to protect you is, and it's stupid. You are the only person with power over your own situation. Protection from pain or something I understand, but why the hell would want protection in battle, if the only way to get into Valhalla is to die in battle? Besides, there is no such thing as protection in battle. The best fighters win (that is nature). A higher being protecting someone, thats just like alot of these contradicting christian concepts. Odinism is about nature. The strongest win, and people who die fighting go to Valhalla.
