edit: Just going to write the tl/dr version.

I going to have a single dorm. Am i going to get hassled about it?

I suppose I'm just being paranoid, but I'd like some input

Single dorm rooms are good. Privacy=good; the one quarter I had a roommate was very annoying.

hassled? nah, i don't think you will be.

i oftentimes wish i had a single room. not only more privacy, but less dealing with a roommate in a little 12x15 box. getting woken up because he's on the phone. having to deal with a bunch of his friends in the room at once, or vice versa. gets pretty cramped, and the first spot anyone goes to sit is my bed.

dorm floors are usually pretty social places, especially if you're a freshman. people leave their doors open when they're home and it's more like one big connected house, if you want it to be. or you could isolate yourself if you prefer. single rooms are nice.

Cherish it while you have it.

Cherish it while you have it.

I can't agree more.

Not only is privacy nice, but potential roommates can be anybody.

I just did two semesters in a quad-room dormitory with a wannabe gangsta rapper and two belligerent hockey nuts which did a large number on my study effectiveness.

You shouldn't be hassled at all, if you ask me.

Enjoy it.

No, be happy. Sometimes a roommate even sucks if you're friends with the person. If wish I had a single, don't be paranoid. Sure some people might be jealous, but there are so many good reasons not to have a roommate.

Things like privacy, you can study whenever you want, you can have a girl over whenever you want, you can have friends over whenever you want, you don't have to deal with random people coming to your room that you don't like, you don't have to deal with leaving your room if your roommate has a girl over, your room can be as clean or as dirty as you want, you don't have to deal with a person who snores or talks in his/her sleep, you can watch tv or play video games whenever you want, you could even smoke in your room if you wanted to.

My roommate was a nice guy sometimes, but he had limited social skills, he didn't party at all (which is fine, but the kid judge me and wouldn't let me keep beer in my OWN fridge, the kid seemed like he would rat on me), and was very annoying.

Single all the way no matter what it costs.

Takes a LOT of stress out of the equation.

You lucky bastard! What everyone else said. You won't be hassled - you will be a happy camper.

I paid for single room my second year of college, and it was worth it. Once you go, you'll never go back though.

No, it's college not high school. People won't think of you any differently if you sit by yourself at lunch or live in a single.

Living in a dorm gave me one of the best years of my life. My roommate and I weren't really friends, and I was never in my room, unless it was to sleep or study.

I'm not a very social person at all, but I was in a double and had no problems with my roommate -- for the most part. It wouldn't be terrible for the OP to try out having a roommate, though whether or not it turns out terribly has more to do with luck than anything else. Shit, my roommate was even gay and we didn't have that many issues besides him spewing all his faggy propaganda about how virtually all males are budding homosexuals and telling his tales of buttseckz.

Judging from the posts in this thread, however, I'd say I'm in the minority when it comes to a positive overall roommate experience.

He was already issued a single. So, it's really not an option to try out a double. He was just wondering if people would hassle him for it. As far as single vs double goes though, I'd definitely rather have a single. Sure, you could have a good room mate, but there is a high chance he won't be a perfect room mate. Hell, even if he is a good room mate, it's still annoying sleeping in the same room as someone day in and day out(getting woken up/getting kept up), tolerating their friends coming in the room, listening to their shitty music, et cetera. My room mate wasn't that bad, but I would have been ten times happier if I was in a single.

I lived with roommates my first year.

Never again.

It seems unanimous that most Totseans like their privacy. You are a Totsean as well, therefore, it is more likely for your experience to be like theirs. In other words listen to what they say... Not what I am going to write below:

I enjoyed having a room mate. My dorm floor was really social. The doors were always open, and I made some of my best friends there (including my room mate). I don't really have any experience living in a single, however, the kid that did live in the single on our floor was a fucking loser. He had no friends because he didn't talk to anyone. That can be resolved by sitting out in the common area and talking to people. Don't get me wrong, nobody had anything against the kid... He just had no friends. Do you see where I am going with this?

Do what you want though. Thats just MY experience in the dorms.

Well you're taking a risk of rooming with someone you don't get along with, doesn't clean up after themselves or other problems. I had a good time in the dorms my first year, they put me in with the track team and we always had parties. Still, you can have just as much fun in a single on a social floor.

At my college we have five bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a TV room in an apartment style dorm. Man it rocked, if you wanted privacy or to jack off you could close your door. And you had all the social benefits (like drinking buddys) of living with 4 people.

Not worth the price. Seriously.

i don't think they're much more expensive at my school. something like $1700 a quarter as opposed to $1600 for a two person occupancy. extra $300 a year.

Thats not too bad then. For my college it would be about 1200 dollars more a year.
You could pay me 1200 dollars to put up with one shitty roommate for a year.

At my school, the cheapest dorm is the one with the singles.

heh, room and board is the same at my school no matter where you live.

Well, board changes because of meal plans, but where you live doesn't matter.

having a roommate sucks, unless your roommate is a perfect fit. Privacy rocks. here's what you have to deal with if you live in a double:
*shitty music
*annoying habits (snorting, sneezing loudly, that kind of shit)
*fucking greasy jewbag nasty girlfriends
*fucking gay as hell friends
*disrupted sleep
*living with either a lazy bum who won't clean up or a neat freak that will flip shit at a candy wrapper on the ground
*drunkard who stumbles in at 4am every night, sometimes with another drunk girl he wants to fuck OR prude fuck who doesn't know what fun is
*etc

the first spot anyone goes to sit is my bed.

This. for some reason - pisses me off to NO END.

I don't one some stupid, filthy fuck sitting and farting where I fucking sleep.

One time, I walked in, and this kid was laying on my bed, talking to my roomate - with his fucking SHOES on.

I don't want dirt and nasty shit on my clean fucking blankets.

I just stared and him and said :

"You get the fuck off my bed, right now."

Needless to say, he did. I'm not a hard ass, and I'm normally VERY patient with just about anything.....anything except that.

I know! Even worse is when someone fucking lies down on your bed or uses your pillow as a back rest. Fuck does that ever annoy me.

Shit man, this one time I was living with who I thought was this pretty cool guy, but then I come in and he has his friend in my room on my bed (which is one size larger than his) and they're over there 69ing. I'm like "GO HAVE GAY SEX SOMEWHERE ELSE!", and then I looked at where my pillow was and it turns out my roommate's balls are just there hanging on it. He told me "give me a minute", and continued sucking this guy's dick. I was fucking pissed and I told the RA but he wouldn't believe me.
