Is it possible to do this? I'm from Canada, and while Canadian soldiers are few, we are hard as fucking nails. However, If I were to pursue a military career path, I would want to serve in the British Army (the SAS, I know it's an insane selection process but Special Forces would be it, or nothing at all). Could I do this? Or does my country of origin limit my paths.

AFAIK, to join a country's military, you have to be a citizen of that country. And you can only have citizenry in one country at a time. So, you would have to become a British citizen first, and denounce your citizenry to Canada. In the USA, if you join another country's military and are still a citizen of the USA, you are considered to be defecting, which is akin to treason, which is punishable by death. For example, if I decide to join Al-Queda while still a citizen of the USA, that is treason. If I was ever caught, I would be brought back to the USA, and probably sentenced to death.

Interestingly enough, you don't have to be a US citizen to enlist in the US military, just a permanent resident.

If you're a permanent resident and you enlist into the military, you wont have to wait the 5 years to take the citizenship test, they pretty much hand it to you during your enlistment.

But I always thought you could just go on and do that. You know, like a US citizen joining the Foreign Legion or something.

I guess I was mistaken. :p

Any one from a commonwealth country can join the British army. Don't know why you'd want serve with the brits though.

Indeed, an Australian citizen for 10 years can join the NZ or British army and viceaversa.

And I am sure Canada has their own SAS or something similar.

Also, dual nationalities are very common these days. However, I highly doubt an "immigrant" would every qualify to join Special Forces of any sort.
So I'd forget about it.

I'm pretty sure Canada is part of the commonwealth. A Canadian immigrant would have as equal chance as anyone else providing they have checkable background.

You sound like one of my friends who plays way too much counterstrike, you do know that the SAS has probably the highest standards in the world, if you had any chance of qualifying right now you'd be runnning not sitting in front of a computer.

I can already sense this dissolving in to a "SAS vs SEAL vs DEVGRU" thread.

All of those guys suck anyways, that's why they always request that an airforce combat controller be attached to them.

No that wasn't my point, what i meant is that special forces in general have very high standards, and usually most of the people who dream of getting in there tend to play way too much on the computer instead of doing sports.

I mean honestly I think it's silly to join the armed forces because you want to get in the SAS, because most likely you'd probably end up not qualifying and being stuck doing a job you don't like.

Well at the risk...

I can tell you for a fact that in certain *cough* branches of Industry *cough* former SEALS and Rangers start on a lower salary than Legionaires or Sassmen. Not so much to do with their skills rather its an attitude thing (so my former boss).

As A Canadian citizen you can hold dual citizenship with certain countries, (the commonwealth, France, and a few others).

Probably not going to happen, but good luck with it. For alot of people in the army this becomes there goal.

As a canadian, you would be able to join the Army, but i'm almost certain you wouldn't be able to join the SAS.

Just like australians can join the RAF as a gunner but not a pilot.

I know of Fijians in the British SAS, so Commonwealth Citizens can definitely join. For some jobs you have to have been born in the U.K. (Boomer crew etc), but SAS isn't one of them.
