Ok after watching 'The girl who leapt through time', I really need something that's equally awesome. Preferably in movie format.

I'm looking for something lighthearted and funny, but not completely devoid of meaning, if you get what I mean. Something where you can really start liking the central characters.

I'm not overly into action and violent animes, although I did think Elfen Lied was amazing, but that was mainly the message behind it.

Any ideas?

Doesn't have to be anime either by the way. Live action is all good.

Anything by Studio Ghibli, I especially like Princess Monoke, or Laputa.

Go with Studio Ghibli films, the better ones are Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke.

Hmmm. I, personally, wouldn;t include Howl's Moving Castle. I liked Grave of the Fireflies, Nausicaa, and My Neighbor Totoro better.

Except that Grave of the Fireflies is depressing as shit. And no body really likes that.

I thought Grave of the Fireflies was great, it was a nice change o pace for me. It all depends on preferance, so a statement like "nobody realy likes that" is pretty fuckin ignorant.

And I'm gonna reccomend Tekkonkinkreet, and Paprika.. They're both kind of trippy and the animation in Tekk is wicked..

Well the OP doesn't really want Grave of the Fireflies material you know?

But as far as sad/new out look on humanity movies, Grave of the Fireflies is the way to go.

I see what you mean. I thought you were reffering to Grave of the Fireflies as being a bad movie alltogether.

Metropolis seems to fit the OP's choices. Somewhat

There is NOTHING bad about Princess Mononoke. Incredible characters, storyline, themes, scenery...but its not at all lighthearted.

Vampire Hunter D is most excellent and crazy, gory fighting and fun.

Cowboy Bebop the movie is good if your an action fan. More lighthearted than the above.

Endless Waltz? Uhm...ok >_< not lighthearted either.

...damn.

Pom Poko.

I personally thought that Pom Poko was Studio Ghibli's worse film. It just doesn't have the magic that Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, or Princess Mononoke had.

Byousoku 5cm is my favourite Anime of all time. (Movie)

The animation is simply superb, and Tenmon does a great job with the music.

I definitely recommend you check it out

I concur.

I also really enjoyed Voices Of A Distant Star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voices_of_a_Distant_Star). It's my favorite anime, and when you consider it "was written, directed and produced entirely by Makoto on his Macintosh computer" you have to appreciate it all the more.

But get the English dub.

I personally LOVE Endless Waltz. Although Gundam Wing is probably my favorite anime.

Other than Endless Waltz:

Akira
Jin Roh

Naruto redeemed itself for me through the manga. It was mostly ruined my the mainstream fanboys and girls fucking up the series with their shit. But I've moved on from the shitty filler-filled anime.

Manga ftw. It will still never compare to Bleach though.
